Tuesday Times
Havelock North Primary School - 18th October 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
I trust everyone enjoyed a positive couple of weeks with your families. This term is a short but busy one with a lot to look forward to.
New Students
We would like to recognise our amazing new students this term. Well done to Gus, Evie, Leo, Zoey, Charles and Mia for making such a positive start to school life at HNPS.
Tukituki Whānau Festival
Thank you to those amazing people who were able to support our tamariki at the Whānau Festival at the end of last term at Havelock North Intermediate. It was a very special night and so good to see the local schools working together and supporting each other in such a positive way. A special thank you to Whaea Robin, Tara Wilkins and Sue Dunn for their work with the Kapa Haka. Our students were amazing. Thank you also to Jess Cranswick and her awesome team for running the BBQ and to the staff for their support. Great team effort!
Out of Zone Ballot
The ballot closes THIS THURSDAY 20th October. The Draw the ballot will take place on the 25th October and will be carried out by Constable Chris Leppein. Families are notified of the outcome by 28th October.
Mufti Day - 28th October
Next Friday we have a Mufti Day to raise money for the Supper Club. The Supper Club supports local families in need by providing meals. Funds raised through the Mufti Day will go towards stocking our school freezer. If you know of anyone in our school community who is going through a tough time, please let us know so we can support them.
Hats
A reminder that now we are in Term 4, hats are compulsory. From Tuesday next week students without hats will need to play in the shade area.
Swimming
Swimming lessons begin for Yr 0-2 children on the 28th October and for Yr 3-6 on the 21st November. Thanks to a massive contribution from the HNPS Home and School, these lessons have been considerably subsidised. $10 can be paid online or at the school office. We thank our Home and School team for their support in funding the large majority of this programme.
Quote of the week
Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap
but by the seeds that you plant.
Robert Louis Stevenson
Have a great week everyone and stay safe over the long weekend. A reminder that both this Friday and next Monday are holidays.

Caretaker Position
Sadly, the amazing Mr Robin Gray is retiring so we need to find a replacement. This is a 40 hour per week role, and remuneration will be subject to negotiation, depending on the skills and experience of the preferred candidate.
The Caretaker is responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the grounds and buildings. Minor maintenance work shall be undertaken when such work can be done without the requirements of a registered or qualified tradesman.
Please send a CV and letter of application to Nick Reed - Principal by Friday 28th October.

Focus for the next few weeks is...
Being kind is an important skill for all people to learn. Encourage your child/ren to tell you about how they were kind at school today. Also, share experiences from your own day about people showing kindness.

Enviro Corner Term 4 week 1
In just 10 weeks Hawke's Bay school children have managed to collect 2.8 tonnes of lids and caps in a pilot recycling initiative.
Good Caps is an initiative led by Plastics NZ and a dozen schools participated with the aim to stop these valuable materials going to landfill.
Jasper from Room 7, was interviewed by Jesse Mulligan on Radio New Zealand about his and HNP’s involvement in the programme. We were so proud of you Jasper!
HNP will keep collecting 2 and 5 plastic, metal and aluminium caps. Please clean/sort them accordingly and place them in the collection boxes outside the hall.
Thank you to the families who are collecting from cafe’s/restaurants in the village already. If you are interested in collecting caps from the following cafe’s/restaurants on a weekly basis please let Mrs Jarvis know - Bay Espresso, Mons, Mary’s, Piku, The Work Room, The Olive Tree.
The Good Caps organisation would appreciate families completing the following survey around this pilot programme - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GoodCapshome

We are just over 4 weeks away from the Peak Trail Blazer on the 20th November and the organising committee is in full swing.
It’s been great to see the Peak Trail Blazer T-shirts being worn around school. We have a few extra t-shirts in certain sizes, so if your child missed out and would like a t-shirt, please get in touch.
We are looking for volunteers who can help marshal on the morning of the event 20th November or help with registration on November 19th from 12-2pm. We would really appreciate the support so if anyone can lend a hand, we would be very grateful.
Entries have been going strong and we aren’t too far away from selling out the Tainui Trail, so please make sure you get your entries in so you don’t miss out.
If you would like to support in any way, please contact Catherine Wedd on 0212886770 or Peak Trailblazer peaktrailblazer@hnps.school.nz

Sports at Havelock North Primary School
A HUGE thank you to those that have volunteered their time this term to coach and/or manage. It is much appreciated and our team sport couldn't happen without people like you.
If you have any queries, sports news or photos please email Erica Cranswick at sport@hnps.school.nz
QUICK Sports Survey (Community) - please complete
We are always reflecting on and refining our processes at HNPS. Our main aim is to promote a lifelong love of physical activity by providing a range of positive sporting experiences for our Tamariki, while also providing challenges relevant to each child's skills and experience.
This is a focus on the HNPS sporting teams, events and opportunities, it DOES NOT include Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming and Fitness or Physical Education sessions at school.
We still need coaches / managers for some of our Term 4 sports teams. If you have been emailed that your childs team does not have a manager / coach, please consider helping out. If there are no volunteers, the team will have to be withdrawn from the competition.
