Message from Principal Shimmin

Hello families!

Welcome to October! October is one of my favorite months of the year! It is a time that the weather starts to turn cooler and the beauty of the changing leaves can be found all around us! It is also a time for HALLOWEEN! We want to make this year as fun and unique as last. Please stay tuned for our 2nd annual Halloween Parade to be held on October 31st, beginning at 11:30 a.m. More information to come!

In addition to all of the fun events, we also find our first quarter and term wrapping up for the 2022-2023 school year. As a reminder middle school's first term ends on October 19th and elementary's first term ends on November 11th. Please make sure to reach out to your teachers for any support or information you may need to make your 1st term the most successful.

Many families have been asking how they can support their children. One of the most effective ways is to become a member of the PTSA. The PTSA helps guide community between schools and families. In an online environment, this connection is especially important. The PTSA are moving to a virtual space and continuing to connect families, teachers, and administrators in supporting uniques needs brought on by the virtual environment. PTSA is for everyone! Parents, guardians, students, teachers, grandparents, administrators, school board members, aunts, uncles, community members, etc. It is open, without discrimination, to anyone who believes in and supports the mission, purposes, and principles of PTSA. Finally, it does NOT REQUIRE you to volunteer. If you want to volunteer, that's great, but your support as a member is enough. For more information and to join the Canyons Online PTSA, join us for a meeting on October 13th, at 6:30 p.m., at the District Office, in the Hidden Peaks room, located at 9361 S. 300 E. A live stream option is also available and can be access on our YouTube channel. If you are unable to attend the meeting, either in-person or through livestream, you can become a member by filling out the information on this website or calling the main office for any assistants, at 801-826-5461.

Finally, as with anything new, some things may need some adjustments. I have been grateful for your patience as we have continued to navigate new and unique situations that the online environment may bring. One of these such adjustments has been the attendance/engagement policy. As you may or may not know, attendance looks differently than it does in a brick and mortar school. Online students receive instruction both synchronously (live, such as Zoom) and asynchronously (done on your own time, usually through Canvas). Developing an attendance policy that takes both of these modalities in mind, can be tricky. Earlier, I sent a survey to gather what is working for your family and what is not working for your family. It is a quick 3-4 questions for gathering feedback only. If you have filled out this survey, thank you! If not, can you please take a few minutes to fill it out so that decisions can be made that best support the learning of your students. Thank you for taking the time to provide your experience.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week and enjoy all the activities that October brings. Do not forget to continue to earn your PBIS points and visit our PBIS store and Ms. Wolfsden. We look forward to you coming into the building. Please stop by and say hi to me and also get a piece of candy 🍭. I love visiting with all my students!

October is one of my favorite months for many reasons. Birthdays in my family, Halloween, beautiful fall leaves… and it’s the point in the school year when students are more comfortable with the day to day routines of their schedule and how classes work. It’s the time when kids are often ready to build relationships with their classmates. In Canyons Online, we have our homeroom/morning meeting zooms, Lunch Bunch on Tuesday and Thursday at 12 and at 1, and the Canyons Online Student Center Canvas course. In the Canvas course we have discussion groups for kids to share their interests with each other, resources and activities to teach coping skills, and career/college exploration presentations.November is the time for 8th grade students and their parents to meet with their school counselor, and I will begin scheduling 30 minute meetings in person or through zoom later on this month.
