The Siple Scoop
February 2019
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I cannot remember in all of my years as an educator, or even back to when I was a student, a time when we had such extreme winter weather! These snow days are something else. Like the children a snow day has always been a great break, but this many? We cannot control the weather and the safety of the students and staff is critical. I want to assure you that the teachers and I are well aware of the learning time lost and are prepared to work hard to get our students back on track as soon as the weather permits.
In the mean time, I want to encourage you to help your child maintain the skills they have worked hard to develop. Encourage them to read. Have them read to themselves, to you, to their dog or stuffed animals. They can even read to a family member over the phone. Have them practice their writing. If you have little learners have them practice writing their alphabet or their name. They can practice writing their sight words. Older students can write a story and illustrate it. Perhaps they could write a story about what they did on their snow day. Maybe they could write a letter to a friend or family member using paper and a pencil, not email or text! Grab a stack of flash cards and work on memorizing math facts. Play math games with a deck of cards. Your students learn these games at school. Ask them to teach you how to play. All of these ideas are great ways to pass time when your child is getting bored and beginning to fight with their siblings! Trust me, I remember when my girls were young and we had too many snow days in a row.
Another recommendation is to get out a board game. Playing games helps develop social skills like taking turns, playing fair, and learning how to win and lose and still be a good sport. It also allows you to have fun as a family. Playing games and laughing together is a wonderful way to tighten those important family bonds.
I have missed the children so much! I can't wait to get them back to school. The building has been awfully quiet. Here's hoping for better weather ahead!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Anti-Bullying Presentations
In the month of February the school counselor will visit classrooms to give a presentation about anti-bullying. The goals of these presentations are to:
Define bullying
Give ways to prevent it
List suggestions on how to handle bullying
Define an up-stander and describe the impact of is individual
One of the most common mistakes students make is the definition. One mean event is not necessarily bullying. Bullying happens when someone hurts or scares another person on purpose and the person being bullied has a hard time defending him or herself. Usually bullying happens over and over.
After the presentation students will bring home a note to parent(s)/guardian(s). This will detail definitions, prevention, how to handle the bully behavior, and define the role of an up-stander. Please be sure to go over this information with your child. Your children are so precious to all of us at Siple Elementary. Thank you for being wonderful parent(s)/guardian(s)!

FUN TO BE FIT
Happy February! We just finished our bowling unit and moving on to basketball. We will be working on some basketball skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. The students will learn some different games that they can play at recess or at home that are fun and will help them continue working on their basketball skills. I love this unit and I'm very excited to get started teaching our Siple Stars how to dribble, pass and shoot a basketball.
Winter is still here - Please make sure the students have tennis shoes for class. This is for their safety. Winter boots are not made to run and do some of the things that we do in gym class. If they wear boots to school please make sure they pack their tennis shoes in their backpack so they can change into them before class. Have a great month of February!
