Dear Health Alert

My name is Erica and I'm a vegetarian. I have these cracks at the corners of my mouth, they hurt and are very irritating. What do you think it is?

Doc Wash's Answer:

The Deficiency:

Thank you for entrusting me and my expertise to give you this information.

The deficiency is the lack of iron, zinc, and B vitamins like niacin (B3), riboflavin (B2), and B12 in your diet. It’s actually common if you’re a vegetarian to not get enough iron, zinc, and B12 because you’re skipping out on essential immunity-building proteins due to your diet.

The Fix: Eat more poultry, salmon, tuna, eggs, oysters, clams, sun-dried tomatoes, and peanuts. Also, iron absorption is enhanced by vitamin C, which also helps fight infection, so combine these foods with veggies like broccoli, red bell peppers, kale, and cauliflower.
