National Custodian Appreciation Day

Big picture

Being a custodian is sometimes a thankless job. National Custodian Appreciation Day, celebrated on October 2nd each year, recognizes the hard work that it takes to maintain public facilities and spotlights the people who diligently work to make sure we have schools and workplaces that are clean and sanitary. For National Custodian Appreciation Day, the Bobcat Family would like to send a special thank you to the custodians in our school for their work in keeping our building in tip-top shape!

Sending a Bobcat THANK YOU to Ms. Ashley, Ms. Cruel, and Mr. Holmes!

Wednesday, October 6th is International Walk to School Day!

International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event, and over time, it has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

Due to the restrictions related to COVID-19, our Walk to School Day activity will be for students only. Be sure to dress your child in athletic shoes so he/she can comfortably walk and participate in movement activities.

South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs (SCCMA) Highlights Culture and Traditions of Hispanic Heritage

Source:

In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs (SCCMA) will celebrate Hispanic and Latino culture and history through its Celebra La Herencia Hispana social media campaign.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a great opportunity for us to honor the contributions of Hispanics and Latinos and their impact on society,” said Dr. Delores Dacosta, Executive Director for the SC Commission for Minority Affairs. “It’s important that we recognize these heritage months so that everyone has the opportunity to learn about their rich history.”

The campaign, which was organized by the agency’s Hispanic/Latino Affairs Division, will feature recipes, historical figures, languages, and music from Afro Latino and Indigenous communities. Messages will be posted to the agency’s Facebook and Instagram (@sccfma) pages through October 15.

For more information, contact the SC Commission for Minority Affairs at 803-333-9621.

Danza de la Botella

Big picture

Bottle dance performances feature dancers dressed in 19th-century rural costumes that include an ankle-length skirt. The bottles used by dancers are often decorated with a tricolor ribbon reminiscent of the Paraguayan flag or with flowers. Bottle dance performances tend to be largely improvised with basic movements consisting of dancers with outstretched arms holding the ruffles of their skirts while maintaining the impression that there are no bottles. The dance can be performed by individuals, couples, or groups with each dancer balancing one or two bottles on their heads.

Casabe

Casabe — a crispy flatbread made from cassava (yuca) flour – was at the center of the Taíno diet. Yuca and the knowledge of how to make this flatbread was brought here by the Taino from the mainland. For this reason, it is said that the conquest of the Americas was fueled by casabe, taken by the conquistadors from Hispaniola as they continued their push into Mexico and other parts of the continent.

"So important was this food to these indigenous people, that the main god in their pantheon was called Yocahu Vagua Maorocoti, which is roughly translated as 'Our Great Lord of Yuca'". - Juan B. Nina, El Origen de la Cocina Dominicana.

Wayuu People of Colombia

Big picture

Jamaya! (Hello!) The Wayúu inhabit the arid Guajira Peninsula straddling the Venezuela-Colombia border, on the Caribbean Sea coast. Two major rivers flow through this mostly harsh environment: the Rancheria River in Colombia and the El Limón River in Venezuela representing the main source of water, along with artificial ponds designed to hold rainwater during the rainy season. The territory has equatorial weather seasons: a rainy season from September to December, which they call Juyapu; a dry season, known by them as Jemial, from December to April; a second rainy season called Iwa from April to May; and a long second dry season from May to September.
