A Message from the Williston Schools Leadership Team
by Jacqueline Parks
Parent teacher conferences are coming up soon and we encourage all families to participate in them. We know students do best when there is strong collaboration between the home and school and conferences are one avenue to support this relationship.
CVSD has dedicated time this fall to intentionally learn about each student’s story. By understanding all the components of a student, teachers can build a stronger relationship and strategically match the learning environment and materials. In the end our goal is for all families and students to have a strong sense of belonging in our community.
As a way to frame this work, we have been looking at four key components of our students. These include: identity, proficiency, direction and connections.
Identity includes discovering how each student identifies themselves and how others identify them
Connection looks at how the student is connected in our school community and the greater community.
Direction involves learning about the aspirations of each student, as well as what motivates them and specific goals they have for themselves.
Proficiency is identifying the ways that each student experiences success in the academic setting.
As you prepare for your child’s conference, it may be helpful to think about these four frames in relation to your student. We look forward to seeing you at your student’s conference and continue to partner with you in your child's education.
Safety Team Open House
This month the safety committee will be hosting an open house / meet and greet event. The purpose of the event is to provide the opportunity for parents / caregivers to meet the team, including our community partners, and learn more about our work. There will be coffee / tea and some light breakfast goodies. We hope to see some of you there in the WCS Community Room, 8:00 - 8:30am. All are welcome!

Message from ABS & WCS Physical Education Team
Sneakers Are a Must for Physical Education
We are back into full swing and P. E. classes are underway. We want all children to have the opportunity to be active participants in P.E. In order to accomplish this goal we need your support. In P.E. it is imperative that all children have on appropriate footwear. This is for your child’s safety. During the winter months we recognize that boots are necessary but wearing boots all day is not ideal. Having sneakers to change into will aid both P.E. and your child.
Your child needs to have sneakers for P.E. Keens (sandal type shoe) and Merrills in particular are not appropriate as they do not provide the foot with the needed support for the level of activity and variety of activity your child will be participating in. Both Keens and Merrills have very little support for lateral movements. Merrills also have very little arch support. Keen does make a sneaker but please if purchasing them for P.E. make sure it is the sneaker model and not a water shoe or sandal model. The other sneakers that are not acceptable are slip on sneakers. Often these fly off while moving and again they don’t offer the lateral stability for the child’s foot. Sneakers that tie or Velcro are the best.
Please contact your child’s teacher if you are unsure of the days you child has P.E. They have the schedule for all the Essential Arts classes. Please understand that if your child arrives without appropriate footwear he/she will be asked to change or they will not be allowed to participate that day. Our goal is to have all children active in all classes. In order to achieve this goal we need your support in aiding your child to have proper footwear. If it is a hardship for you to provide sneakers for your child contact the P.E. department. We can equip the child with sneakers than can be kept in their locker for school use.
Thank you,
ABS and WCS Physical Educators

Something to Smile About: Dental Screenings Available for Students in Kindergarten and Third Grade
This year our school was one of 32 schools chosen to take part in Vermont’s Children Dental Health Survey. Schools are chosen at random to represent the general population of our state, this is how the Health Department gets important data about the oral health of Vermont children. Here is the link to the last survey that was done so you can see how the information is used. Children in Kindergarten and Third Grade will have the opportunity to get an oral health screening by a dental hygienist; the results of the screening will be sent home to parents/guardians, and all participating students will get a dental health kit. The screening is limited to children in K and 3rd grade because the Health Department can get all the data they need by screening these two age groups. Good dental health is an important part of being healthy; we’re excited that our school was chosen to participate in this important activity!
If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please contact your child’s school nurse.
If you want your child to take part in the survey, you don’t need to take any action.

Survey Coming for Parents/Caregivers of Students in Grades 6-12
ParentIN CVSD is working with the Champlain Valley School District to better understand the perspectives and needs of parents and caregivers of tweens and teens in our district. Those with students in grades 6-12 will soon receive a survey via email.
Your honest opinions on the questions in the survey are appreciated. Your answers are completely anonymous and will not be used to identify individual respondents in any way.
Results will help us evaluate current programs and plan new ways to support youth and families in our area. If you have any questions about this survey, please reach out to Amy Sayre at asayre@cvsdvt.org or 802-482-6290.
