Did you know? Kindergarten and 1st grade classes often have absenteeism rates as high as those in high school. Many of these absences are excused, but they still add up to lost time in the classroom. Help your child be ready for school by setting a regular bedtime and morning routine, choosing clothes the night before, and saving extended trips for times when school isn’t in session.
#2
Did you know? Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a year, can make it harder to learn to read. Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 3 days every few weeks.
#3
Did you know? Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school - and themselves. Start building this habit in elementary school so that they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
#4
Did you know? Even being late to school may lead to poor attendance. Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Attendance Matters! Children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level by third grade. Students who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school.

Being chronically absent from school makes it hard for a student to keep up with the pace at which they are expected to learn and grow, causing that student to fall behind. Students who are chronically absent also miss out on opportunities to build friendships at school, become active in their school community and pursue future career interests.
