Superintendent's Reflections
Strategic Planning
He also provided an update on strategic planning. On October 24, the Strategic Planning Team held their "Vision Retreat" to answer the question, "Where do we want to be?" The team reflected on the feedback from the community on their work to develop an analysis of the District's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT Analysis). The team also reflected on the characteristics of the desired future of the District. They took first steps in crafting a mission statement, vision statement and core values. The next meeting on November 13 will begin the process of setting the direction of the District. Board Member Jackie Lutz, who is a member of the Strategic Planning Team, encouraged other Board members to review the articles and resources posted on the Strategic Planning web page.
Comments from the Board President
Opening Community Participation
Ann Yoshida, community member, parent of former District 34 students and co-president of League of Women Voters Glenview-Glencoe, encouraged the Board to vote no on the IASB resolution to provide training on firearms to teachers and staff. She offered alternatives:
- Support legislation to fund school resource officers in all schools in Illinois, or
- Support legislation to fund metal detectors in all schools in Illinois
She provided the Board with an informational resource prepared by the League of Women Voters of Illinois.
Summer Construction for 2019 and 2020
- $7.5-8 million for 2019
- $2.6-2.7 million for 2020
- An additional $1 million of optional work
The estimates are based on cost per square foot, not design documents. When the construction manager comes on board and design documents are created, the estimates will become more solid. They provided a preliminary timeline for the work.
Financing
The District’s underwriter, Elizabeth Hennessy from Raymond James, presented an update to the financing options presented at the October 15 meeting. She said that the market update is little changed and that rates are expected to increase. She provided the suggested funding plan and timeline to be ready for summer construction.
Bid Specifications
The Board authorized the District to develop bid specifications for the summer 2019 construction work.
