Christ Church Partners with the Exeter Rotary Club to Train Addiction Recovery Workers
One of my connections to the Exeter community is to be an active member of the local Rotary Club. The club has been instrumental in supporting our work in Cuba re-supplying the water filtrations systems, which we jointly installed in 2016.
This year Christ Church offered its meeting space to host eight training days for those who received Inspiring Hope Scholarships for recovery coach training. Twenty-four students received recovery coach worker training and 11 have taken all the courses to qualify to take the test for certification. Scholarship recipients came from the Exeter Police, student counselors from SAU 16, parents of children with substance use disorder, people in recovery, and other community centers and recovery friendly workplace programs. Kathy Flygare, past President of the Exeter Rotary, said, “It has been a remarkable experience getting to know these very motivated people with a passion to help those suffering from substance use disorder. Each attendee brought stories that led them to these classes. It might have been their recovery, those of family or friends or because of their work. The group and environment allowed for honest and humble sharing. They will spread the knowledge they received like a pebble rippling in a pond and the effects of it will support recovery initiatives for years to come.
We are grateful for this partnership with the Exeter Rotary and for the opportunity to use our church space for such an important community outreach.

Christ Church Receives Grant from Diocese to Fund Feeding Program in Rural Central Cuba
Each year since 2014, Christ Church has sent delegations to Cuba. These delegations have included diocesan clergy and members of the following parishes: St. John’s, Portsmouth; Church of the Transfiguration, Derry; and Church of the Good Shepherd, Nashua. Each delegation has carried with it water filtration systems and replacement parts and filters that are installed in local churches as an outreach to the wider community. Christ Church, working with the Exeter Rotary Club, has installed over eight water systems over the last four years. In addition to working on the water systems, the delegates visit homes, share meals, pray, and worship with the Cuban parishioners. In April 2019 Bishop A. Robert Hirschfeld accompanied 23 members of Christ Church to Cárdenas and Havana, Cuba.
Thanks to the work done by parishioner Chrissy Dube, who wrote the grant, Christ Church has received from the diocese of New Hampshire $3000 to assist in furthering our work in Cuba. The funds will provide opportunities and resources to support La Iglesia Episcopal de Cuba, thereby strengthening our commitment to global partnerships. Members of the group who traveled in April 2019 witnessed first-hand the scarcity of food items. In grocery stores, there was no meat, eggs, bread, or flour on the store shelves. This grant will allow us to help in addressing the problem of food scarcity by focusing on “The Breakfast Project” at The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in the Esmeralda Municipality.
The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in the Esmeralda Municipality in Camagüey Province was a recipient of a water filtration system given by the Exeter Rotary Club in 2016, and now Good Shepherd is home to “The Breakfast Project.” Launched in April 2019, thanks to funding from a Christ Church parishioner, “The Breakfast Project” provides breakfast Monday through Friday to 12 poor village elders. The current funding for this worthy project was set to run out by January 1, but thanks to this grant money, a program that started with a donation from a Christ Church parishioner will continue.
Thank you, Chrissy, for all of your hard work and thanks to the Diocese of New Hampshire for recognizing the value of that work.
Pine Street Players 2019-2020 Season: Something New!
New for PSP’s 2019-2020 Season, a non-musical production! Working on a non-musical play will allow the performers to focus on developing their impressive acting talents.
So what’s the play? Under Lexi Meunier’s direction, actors will explore Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—but with a twist. PSP sets its production in 2020 in a present-day high school!
Romeo and Juliet is both exhilarating and tragic—as all first teenage romances tend to be. The Capulet and Montague families have been tangled in a feud for years. When the young Romeo Montague and his best friends crash a party thrown by Juliet Capulet, the should-be enemies fall immediately and desperately in what they’re sure must be love, setting off a deadly chain of events. (This modern adaptation retains Shakespeare’s original text.)
The cast of twenty features returning PSP performers as well as brand-new faces, from throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Romeo and Juliet will be presented at Christ Church on February 14 and 15 at 7:00, and February 16 at 2:00. Tickets are $15 and will be available online at www.PineStreetPlayersCC.com beginning February 1, as well as at the door one hour before performances (subject to availability).
Please note that the play contains themes of romance and violence that may not be appropriate for younger audience members.
