PATRIOT PARENT POST
by Principal Kate Wyman
Welcome to the last month of 2018. It always seems impossible when the month of December arrives. For many, it is the busiest time of year preparing for the upcoming holidays and time with family. One of the best parts about December is the opportunity to give.
We want to take a moment to thank you for sharing your most precious gifts, your children, with us each day. We are very grateful for the opportunity to work with amazing students. We hope you recognize how appreciative we also are of each of our Patriot families who give to our school by giving of their time, sharing their talents, providing donations, and supporting your child and their teachers. As you and your family prepare for Christmas, please remember "it is more blessed to give, than to receive."
Many of our students will be sharing their musical talents at one of the upcoming December performances. Feel free to come enjoy - it's a great way to get in the holiday spirit.

FROM MRS. HOBSON'S DESK!!
For the month of December, we will continue to work with NED to make Champion Choices! We will be focused on the E in NED’s name which stands for Encourage Others. In class, we will be talking about how even though we are all different, we are all on the same team. We will learn about how we can encourage others with our words and our actions. We will also incorporate empathy into our NED lesson, discussing how others may feel if we encourage them or if we do the opposite. We will even share steps of how you can show empathy! There is a lot to learn in our character education lessons for December and we are excited for a great month of empathy and encouragement!
At home:
Talk at home about what empathy means and how to build empathy. Empathy is feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling. You can build by thinking about the following 5 things:
Look at face and body for clues
What is their point of view?
How does she feel?
How can I help?
What is a kind thing to say?
Talk aboUt ways you can show encouragement without using words.
List as many encouraging words or phrases as you can.
Talk about all of the different places in your life that you can be encouraging (ex. Soccer team, dance class, school, home, grocery store, etc).
Surprise your child with a note of encouragement! The link below has encouraging cards you can print and cut out to send with your child.

DECEMBER-Book of the Month
Fish In A Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
“Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.”
Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike.
APP of the Month - DECEMBER
