Glenealy School Newsletter

5th December 2018

Message from Brenda

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,

Sports day

What a great day Mr Pattison organised for us all last Friday. It was wonderful to see so many parents join in too, and to see the smiles on the student’s faces as they participated in the wide selection of activities. The tug-of-war was strongly contested with such determination, it was fun to see the healthy competition taking place between the houses. A big thanks to Andy Pattison for his outstanding organisation and to the Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC) for the privilege of using their superb venue for this event.

We have students, staff and families leaving Glenealy and Hong Kong at the end of this term. It’s always sad to see students leave the school. We wish you all well and please keep in touch in the future.

Sue Bilbrough

Nurse Sue will be leaving us at the end of this term after working for Glenealy in a part time capacity for 3 years. Over this time Sue has forged very positive relationships with staff, students and families. She has a caring approach and always wants to do the very best for the children to ensure they are safe and healthy. Sue has been part of our Health and Safety Team, has worked alongside teachers to deliver health programmes and has been an active team player in all of school life at Glenealy. Sue has a great sense of humour and has been fully committed to her role of Nurse at Glenealy School. Sue will be working all next week, so if you see her in the playground, do stop and say “goodbye”.We will miss her and wish her all the very best as she and her husband leave Hong Kong and start a new adventure.

Robyn Bellerby

The parents of 5B will be aware that Robyn will be taking leave from Glenealy school from January 2019. For unforeseen circumstances (not health related) Robyn needs to return to Europe, and hence will be taking a sabbatical for 18 months. Many of your children will have been taught by Robyn and I know that they have loved being in her class. The great news is that Robyn will be coming back to Glenealy in August 2020! Robyn is sad to be leaving and would like to thank you all for being such supportive parents. We wish Robyn and her husband all the very best.

Gillian Mee - Teacher for 5B

We are very fortunate to have Mrs Gillian Mee to teach 5B after Christmas. Gillian is working as a part time teacher in Glenealy School this year and will take over 5B from January until the end of the academic year.

Netball and Football

Over the last few months our netball and football teams have been actively involved in weekly practises and inter-school tournaments with other ESF and international schools in Hong Kong. Mr. Pattison is very proud of their teamwork and drive to improve their skills and team patterns each week. It’s been wonderful to have the support of parents on the sideline and we thank you for making the commitment to come, even when some of these tournaments have early Saturday morning starts! Thanks to Christine Meaney and Michelle Shephard who organised our new sports kits for the teams, which look fabulous. A huge thank you to all the coaches that have been involved and Mr. Pattison for his arrangements. Good luck to the netball girls who are competing in a tournament today!

Celebrating Camps at Glenealy

Camps in Glenealy start in Year 3 with a day camp on Lantau.

The children learn water-based skills and develop their sense of independence in an outdoor adventure setting.

In Year 4 over night camp, the children sleep in dormitories with their friends, and have their first opportunity to experience night activities, as well as learning new skills such as dragon boating, raft building and rock climbing.

These new skills are further developed in Year 5 with a full camping experience of sleeping in tents and a range of water and land based activities.

Year 6 camp is land based and sees the children participate in archery, climbing and gorging. Throughout our camps programme, the development of leadership skills is a key focus. Children gain increasing independence and confidence in their own abilities, building resilience and determination. It is highly rewarding to witness the continual progress the children make as they face (and overcome!) the unique challenges presented in these outdoor environments.

Please watch this video for a vivid look at camp life.

Parental Control over apps.

Throughout the year, this image has been shared widely on social media detailing apps which parents should have concerns about.
Big picture

There are three areas of concern that have been identified.

Firstly, that apps such as Calculator% are actually not what they seem, but are used to hide photos and content. It is not the only app that does this, ‘Audio Manager’ and ‘Vault’ are two other examples. This blog gives parents practical tips to identify this app.

The second is cyber bullying and well being concerns when apps have user questions answered anonymously.

Finally, apps which encourage users to meet new people putting your child at risk of unsafe encounters with strangers.

The best advice that we can give you is to ensure that you have control of the apps that your children are downloading and not relying on them to make safe decisions.
