Finding the height of the gym wall w/Mr. Lange
Students in Mr. Lange’s geometry classes participated in an activity where
they used an inclinometer to find the height of the gym wall. This is an activity
similar to where a forest ranger could use the same instrument to estimate the
height of a tree. Data such as a student’s eye to floor height and angle of elevation
were recorded, then the students used right triangle trigonometry to estimate the
height of the wall. Students seemed to enjoy the “hands on” activity, which applied
math to a real-life problem.
