3 E'S- ENRICH, EXTEND & ENHANCE
K-12
BIG IDEA
The 3E's is a great strategy to differentiate a lesson or unit. Pick one of the E’s to create a rigorous learning experience for your students.
ENRICH
This means to add another variable or another related concept that fits within the unit.
For example: When studying the solar system, students involved in an enrichment activity study the planets and how their distance from the sun affect their weather patterns.
EXTEND
This is where you take the topic and expand it beyond the unit, but within the discipline/field.
For example: Students studying the solar system would extend the topic to studying famous astronomers and what they do.
ENHANCE
This is where you take the concept embedded within the unit of study and expand it across disciplines.
For example: The solar system unit is focused on the concept of systems (how it works, parts to whole). Students would look for other systems and compare and contrast those systems to the solar system. How is the digestive system similar to the solar system?
