Tag Cloud Bulletin

Edition 2 - 1/10/2014

What is new in TAG CLOUD?

The TAG CLOUD project (Technologies lead to Adaptability & lifelong enGagement with culture throughout the CLOUD) is ready to start with the evaluations of the demo at its three pilot sites (Alhambra of Granada in Spain, Barber Institute of Fine arts in United Kingdom and the city of Sør Trøndelag in Norway) thus progressing towards its objectives to stimulate lifelong engagement with cultural heritage.

The project has created its user profile ontology in order to provide adaptive and personalised cultural content to users, redefined its application scenarios taking into account diversity of cultural sites and audiences, and initiated the development of demos for the three pilot sites!

Have a detailed view of TAG CLOUD’s main advancements in the following sections.

TAG CLOUD is redifining cultural experiences

Creating unique cultural experiences for you

To provide adaptive and personalised cultural content and experiences, it is necessary to develop a user profile ontology that defines users’ needs, preferences and likes for the TAG CLOUD system.

To accomplish this task, a systematic classification of the user profile ontology was done based on the definition of users, user profiles, devices, social media accounts, and user interface preferences supported by the analysis of 5 standards for user profiling, 4 social media and motivation mechanism, and 4 relevant user profiling ontologies.

How will the architecture work?

The architecture for the TAG CLOUD system is being defined taking account point of views and needs of users, cultural institution, as well as developers. The TAG CLOUD will consider both Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) paradigms. The first, to offer a flexible service to users that will allow data to be easily analysed for recommendations. The later, to offer institutions and developers the power to create applications based on the system.

Further developments will also consider the importance of the relationships between different data in the TAG CLOUD system as well as how the system will make recommendations. Different graph databases will be analysed to identify the most appropriate for TAG CLOUD and appropriate metrics will be selected to classify a user and what should be tailored to him/her.

Towards “Cooltura”, our TAG CLOUD application

The name “Cooltura”, the TAG CLOUD app, comes from the idea of experiencing culture in a cool way in order to generate lifelong engagement between users and culture. Cooltura will allow users to experience culture in a personalised, dynamic, interactive and exciting way through the integration of social media, augmented reality and storytelling technologies.

With Cooltura in your mobile device, you will be able to learn and enjoy different cultural sites to see routes to follow, pictures or content through Augmented Reality. The Cooltura app will bring information of cultural sites matching your interests and will allow you to share content through social media or to see if anyone else share your interest and interact with them in real time!

Whether you are visiting museums, historic monuments or cities, the Cooltura app will allow you to experience culture and the contemporary life in your own way.

Get a closer look at some demos

The initial specifications for the TAG CLOUD system on social media, augmented reality and storytelling technologies have been defined and are now being explored in different demos (mobile apps) which will be part of or will be integrated with Cooltura:

  • A location based Quiz-Game where users walk across different areas to unmask map tiles
  • A virtual knight/storyteller that appears to tell the story of a former emperor at Alhambra when users point their mobile device to a marker around a pillar
  • A puzzle based on images of the site

In addition, small demos for supporting activities have been created combining different technologies. For example, a geo-referential augmented reality demo explore how info overlaps with real world elements based on GPS, and a partial integration of social media has been done through an interactive menu; and a storytelling demo (Stedr) combines social interaction with user generated content, map views, place view with stories and pictures, and social behaviour.

Why use Cooltura?

There are lots of different ways you will be able to experience culture with the TAG CLOUD app, if you want to be one of the firsts test it, follow our website and social media activity to know the launching date.

Spreading the word about TAG CLOUD

TAG CLOUD in HCII 2014, Crete
TAG CLOUD was present in the 16th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) 2014 held on 22-27 June in Crete, Greece to participate and contribute to the international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical, generic and applied areas of HCI.

TAG CLOUD participated in the session “Adaptability & Lifelong Engagement with Culture through new Interaction Modalities” with the presentation of six papers.

TAG CLOUD in eCult Dialog Day 2014, Tallin

TAG CLOUD was also present at the eCult Dialogue Day "Creating the Magic: Matching Culture and ICT" held on 14-17 May 2014 at Tallinn, Estonia.

TAG CLOUD was presented in the Kumu Art Museum as part of the European Museum of the Year Award 2014 – EMYA 2014 describing the project concept, main activities and outcomes achieved. During the event, TAG CLOUD was able to network with representatives from museums, technology providers, other EU projects, and stakeholders from the public sector.

What is Next?

Our pilots are coming soon!

Evaluation of the Cooltura app will start in October 2014 at our three pilot sites: Alhambra of Granada (Spain), Barber Institute of Fine Arts (UK) and the city of Sør Trøndelag (Norway).

A continuous prototype installation has been adopted so the TAG CLOUD team can gather thorough feedback of the perceived usefulness, ease of access and interaction, acceptance and satisfaction of the end users.

Do you want to test the Cooltura app?

If you want to participate in the evaluation of the Cooltura app you can send us an email to tagcloudproject@gmail.com detailing the pilot site you will be visiting and the date.
