Pirate Presence - September is "Attendance Awareness Month"
September is Attendance Awareness Month. As we roll out our Pirate Presence campaign, our goal is that our students will be in attendance every day, to make sure students have a 93% attendance rate or higher for the entire year.
Monday we announced via our PCTV NEWS broadcast that we want students to take selfies and post them to Instagram and Twitter and tag the HS account (@PCHShalls) using the hashtag #PiratePresence. We want our students to be visible and show everyone you are here at school!
Students who post using the hashtag will have a chance to win prizes weekly!
Please make sure you only take selfies during passing time, before and after school and during lunch!
We want our Pirates to be present every day! And look out for your peers. Is someone missing from school? Reach out to them.

Safe and Civil Schools
Our school is participating in a project supporting building leadership. As a part of that project, all students will be asked to complete an anonymous survey about school climate and their experiences in school. The purpose of the project is to determine if a training program for principals helps promote a positive and safe school for students. One way we will examine whether the program is helpful is by asking students their perceptions of the school and behaviors that can affect student academic success.
Students will be asked to complete an electronic survey (with no names) at school. It will last 20-30 minutes. The survey is completely voluntary, and privacy will be strictly protected. Student responses cannot be linked back to individual students. If there are any questions your child does not wish to answer, he/she is free to skip questions and they may stop taking the survey at any time they choose. Students who do not wish to participate in the survey or stop participating or whose parents choose to deny permission for their participation will be provided with an appropriate alternative activity (e.g. reading in the school library or quiet reading) while the surveys are being administered.
If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please notify the school office. Let us know if you have any questions.
Counseling Department
For students who are planning on attending a college, university, or technical school after high school, it is essential to begin preparing early. Part of that preparation includes knowledge of admission requirements and course expectations to plan for appropriate courses in high school. These courses should be part of every student's ICAP and enrollment requests.
In order to assist with this planning, eligible students are invited to attend ONE of the following college fairs:
Wednesday, October 10:
Missouri Western State University College Fair
MWSU Campus
Tuesday, October 16:
Kansas City College Fair
KC Convention Center
Students will leave Platte County High School at 8:30 a.m. and will return to the school by 11:00 a.m. If you would like your child to attend one of these opportunities, please complete the attached appropriate permission form and return it to the PCHS Counseling Center by Friday, September 28, 2018, so that transportation can be arranged.
Only students who have returned their form and have met the following criteria by the permission form deadline will be allowed to attend:
- Have an interest in attending a college fair to prepare for choices beyond high school.
- Have a grade of D or higher in all of their classes.
- Have 90% or higher attendance for this school year
- Is in good standing (ie--no ISS or OSS)
- Have registered to attend the fair. Students will need a copy of their personal barcode from the online registration to get on the bus.

- KC: https://www.gotomyncf.com/Registration/EventSelectForState?stateName=missouri
Multiple colleges and universities will be represented at this fair, and we’re inviting all sophomores and juniors to attend. Both experiences are during the school day and transportation will be provided. If you have any questions about this college fair experience, please contact the PCHS Counseling Center or visit the college fair websites.

Homecoming 2018 Festivities: September 17-21
Platte County's Homecoming festivities run September 17-21. This year's theme is "Platte COUNTRY Homecoming 2018" - a country theme. Click here for all of the week's spirit days and festivities.
PCHS will host the Victory Supper on Wednesday, September 19, starting at 6 p.m. at Pirate Stadium. The Victory Supper will be a community pep rally with our coaches introducing the fall teams, alumni coming back to speak, and the crowning of the underclassmen candidates and the Homecoming King. This evening will also feature performances by the PCHS drumline, PCHS cheerleaders, as well as alumni cheerleaders. PCHS cheerleading alumni are asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for a short practice. Food will also be provided, and the event is open to the community.
The Homecoming Parade will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 21, and will run on Fourth Street from Thomas Drive to the former Rising Star Elementary. Students will be dismissed three hours early that day. Parents and the community are encouraged to arrive by 2:25 p.m. as Fourth Street between Zed Martin and Thomas Drive will be closed to traffic beginning at 2:30 p.m. Thomas Drive between Siegrist Elementary and Fourth Street will also be closed. If you'd like to participate in the parade, please contact Kyle Perkins or Gena Puckett for an entry form by September 19. AGAIN THIS YEAR: There will be a shuttle bus to take parade participants and their sponsors back to the main PCR-3 campus. The shuttle bus will be parked along Zed Martin Drive. Floats will disband in the Rising Star Elementary parking lot and will take the path from the Rising Star playground to Zed Martin Drive. We encourage parents to pick up their participants at the PCR-3 main campus.
Immediately following the parade, on the Platte County Courthouse steps, the Traditions Band will perform several pieces including the Platte County "Fight Song" to get in the Homecoming spirit. Wells Bank will also be hosting its annual Community Tailgate Party, which will feature a PCR-3 Voice Competition following the parade in the parking lot of the High Pointe Shops Shopping Center. Come cheer on your favorite faculty as they sing their way to stardom, and enjoy free food and drinks!
Homecoming Football Game: The Pirates will take on the Raytown South Cardinals at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 21 at Pirate Stadium. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime.

SOS - Signs of Suicide
To proactively address these issues, Platte County High School is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as a part of the SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program. This program aims to help students recognize the symptoms of depression and warning signs of suicide in themselves or their friends, and to teach them the appropriate action steps they should take to get help. Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
- To reduce stigma and help our students understand that depression is a treatable mental illness.
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression.
- To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend.
- To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.
- To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it.
On Tuesday, October 2nd, Platte County High School students will participate in the SOS High School Program. This program includes a video, a brief classroom discussion, and completion of a confidential student screening for depression and other risk factors associated with suicidal behavior. If you do NOT wish for your child to participate in the SOS High School Program at Platte County High School, please complete the form attached and return it to the PCHS Counseling Office. If we do not hear from you, we will assume that your child has permission to participate in this program. We appreciate your partnership in our efforts to prevent youth suicide in our school!

Bullying and Safety Concerns
Safety is one of our district’s top priorities and to help safeguard our school community, our district is now using SafeSchools Alert, a tip reporting service that allows students, staff, and parents to submit safety concerns to our administration.
You and your child can easily report tips on bullying, harassment, or any safety issue you're concerned about through SafeSchools Alert.
Every tip SafeSchools Alert receives about our district is immediately logged in the system and our administration is notified so that they can investigate and take appropriate action. And, tips may also be submitted anonymously if you prefer.
Together, using SafeSchools Alert, we can make our district a safer place to learn!
