Thanksgiving Message from the Principal
Thanksgiving is nearly here, marking a time when many pause to reflect on the people and events for which we are grateful. ISB is an incredible community to which I am thankful to belong. Our students demonstrate not only academic determination, but also compassion and empathy for others. We are fortunate for the support our families provide to our school, from helping their students get up early to ensuring homework is completed to the many hours of volunteer work to enrich our students' school experience. I'm grateful for the dedication of our staff, doing whatever it takes to ensure all students have access to and support in the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programs. IB for All is a worthy goal for which they work tirelessly.
Our staff is very thankful for the ability to regularly collaborate on Early Release Wednesdays. The first week of the month we gather as an entire Faculty to further develop our knowledge and skills on Culturally Responsive Teaching, teaching literacy in all content areas, and aligning our implementation of IB's Approaches to Learning and AVID strategies. The second week of the month teachers work in Professional Learning Teams (PLT). At ISB, PLTs are focused on 9th grade on-track for graduation, MYP implementation, using technology to enhance feedback to students, effective strategies in World Language classrooms, effective math instruction, and AVID strategies. On the third and fourth Wednesdays, teachers have had many choices to select from. Extended Essay advisors have learned how to provide meaningful feedback to their advisees and how to conduct the Viva Voce, the final interview with Diploma Candidates. IB Diploma Program teachers have met to discuss this year's Theory of Knowledge Essay prompts to better support our students as they address the prompts in the various subject matters. Teachers have enhanced their skills in MYP Unit & Lesson Design and Canvas, as well as other digital tools. An advantage of the consistent weekly collaboration time is more meaningful professional learning over time, rather than a few days of professional development spread out over the year.
On the recommendation from a colleague, this fall I read The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. It reminded me that we see what we look for in the world and that if we look for things for which we are grateful, we will find ourselves in a state of gratitude. Wishing you a safe and happy Thanksgiving, filled with opportunities for gratitude.

Faculty Changes
This month two ISB Social Studies teachers will be assuming new leadership roles outside the district. Following Thanksgiving weekend, Mr. Amit Kobrowski will assume the role of K-12 Social Studies Specialist at the Oregon Department of Education.
Please join me in welcoming Mr. Michael Jaycox as our new 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher and Mr. Eric Lantz as our new 8th & 10th Grade Social Studies Teacher. Mr. Jaycox recently moved to Oregon from Florida where he taught English and Social Studies, as well as coached the Speech & Debate team. Mr. Lantz is a familiar face to many at ISB as he has been one of our preferred substitute teachers for several years.

Senior portraits are due by December 21st, the last day of school before Winter Break. The picture needs to be a head and shoulders shot, with a picture resolution of 300 dpi, and about a 2.25 x 3.00 inch crop.

Calling All Athletes!
If you have a son or daughter that plays a sport and would like them to be presented in the yearbook, please send us the pictures of them in action! Of course the higher quality the better but you can send them to us and we can decide.
You can send them to andrew_ashkinos@beaverton.k12.or.us (yearbook advisor).

2017-18 School and District Report Cards
School and district report cards for the 2017-18 school year are available at: http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu). We welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the District. We are making progress.
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and affords states greater flexibility. ESSA encourages schools and educators to innovate and create systems that address local needs. As a part of this work, the Oregon Department of Education redesigned the School and District report cards to engage and inform families about their school’s approach to learning, academic and extracurricular offerings, and student performance. Reports cards also serve as an important tool for continuous improvement planning by local and state policymakers, in conjunction with the communities they serve.
At the International School of Beaverton WE are committed to using this information to help tailor our school improvement plans and academic programs to meet the needs of every student. During the year we will communicate with you frequently about student achievement and programs in place at our school to foster student learning and success.
If you have questions about our report card, please contact us. You may also have suggestions for improvements. Please share them! Thank you!
¡Muchas gracias!

Workshops are offered separately to middle or high school students, or to all-age groups, and include demonstrations, performances, discussions, and active sessions. Culture Week, which will be held January 29 through February 1, 2019, also includes a keynote speaker, international student assembly, philanthropy, daily international snacks, related curriculum and ends with an international celebration on Friday evening.
