MST Weekly Update
January 20, 2023
Today was our first snow day of this school year. Today was supposed to be a White schedule day and now that is what it will be when we return to school next week. As a reminder, if we ever have a 2 hour delayed opening, all buses will be at their stops 2 hours later and all students will report to their Advisory at 9:50 for attendance. Classes will resume with Period B1/CTE Block 2. Period A/CTE Block 1 are cancelled when there is a delayed opening.
Happy (Chinese) New Year
In an effort to encourage awareness of cultural traditions around the world, Student Council is sponsoring a Chinese New Year Photo Booth in the school store complete with animal masks featuring the 12 members of the Chinese Zodiac. Fun and fortune cookies will continue through next week. And by the way - if your birth year lands on the bunny, 2023 is YOUR year!
Access Academy-Spring 2023
Access Academy is an after-school program designed for high school students to gain confidence in their skills and abilities, make new friends, experience a college campus, learn from college students, and earn high school credits. Access Academy is open to Manchester high school students. Preference is given to high school students who may be underrepresented in higher education, including immigrant and refugee students, students of color, low-income students, first-generation college students, and students facing food and housing insecurity.
Classes are offered on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Students can sign up for one or both days. Access Academy classes run from 4:15-6:00. All classes take place at St. Anselm College. Buses will pick up students at MST at about 3:45 to take students to St Anselm. Dinner will be provided after class and at 6:00 buses will take students back to the high school closest to their home (West, Central or Memorial). Classes start in February and end the first week of May.
Applications can be picked up from Ms. Stephen in the Student Center. Course offerings are listed on the attachment below.
Vaping Information
This week at our monthly staff meeting, our staff was educated about teenage vaping and the dangers associated with vaping. Kim Coronis from Breath New Hampshire gave a 45-minute presentation to the staff making them aware of all of the various forms that vaping devices can take. They also heard about the severe risks that are taken by those who do vape. For example, even though they are called vaping devices, they are really aerosol devices that release tiny liquid droplets containing hazardous chemicals that coat the inside of the lungs. Vaping is highly addictive with one vaping device containing nicotine equal to as many as 90 cigarettes. Vaping can also disrupt the development of both the lungs and the brain in a growing teen.
Please see the information sheets below about vaping risks and solutions for quitting.

MST students may bring a guest from another school provided they submit the permission form that must be signed by an administrator from the other school.

City Year Opportunity
City Year offers an opportunity for high school graduates to work with school children within our own community. Current seniors may want to look at this as an option for post graduate work.
- Our corps members serve as Student Success Coaches: tutors and mentors to students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional growth
- They serve on a diverse team in a systemically under resourced school and partner with a teacher in one classroom for the year
- They also join City Year's inclusive and supportive community—often making lifelong friends—and emerge oriented towards a lifetime of public service
- 2-minute videos on what our members do and our impact
- Corps members receive a bi-weekly stipend of $890 and 100% paid health, vision, and dental insurance
- We'll help them find housing here or they can live at home
- They also receive a $6900+ education grant at the end of the year
- 60 days of PD (all August and every Wednesday) include training on pedagogy, topics in DEI, career support, clarity on mission and values, and community building
