January 13, 2020
Dear parents,
We had a great first week back to school! The six graders won the Friday flannel participation award. Look for another fun, Friday event coming soon.
ENGLISH
6th Grade: We are finishing “The City of Ember” this week and students have three projects to show their understanding of literary elements. Each project is their choice from a list and worth 30 points each. Please check Google classroom for more information. We also have a vocabulary test this Friday and the classroom spelling bee is on the 20th with the school spelling bee on the 22nd.
7th Grade: We have finished “The Giver” and students have until the 17th to turn in three projects. Please check Google classroom for more information. The vocabulary test is this Friday and the classroom spelling bee is on the 20th. The school spelling bee is on the 22nd. Students who are interested have been given a word list.
8th Grade: We just started reading Soul Surfer and we are looking at different people who have overcome major obstacles in their lives. The first person we learned about was Austin Hatch. Mr. Hatch played basketball for the University of Michigan and survived two plane crashes. The second is a football coach named Rob Mendez. Mr. Mendez was born with no arms and legs and although he’s never actually played football, he has become a successful coach. We will continue to study real world examples of people who have overcome challenges while we read our book.
SOCIAL STUDIES
6th Grade: We have begun our study of demography or population. Students have a quiz on Monday over vocabulary list 1 posted in Google Classroom. They will also need to identify the 12 most populated countries. This week we will be discussing birth and death rates as well as figuring out what natural increase refers to.

ART
7th Grade will be working with color mixing next week and some shoe art! It will be fun, make sure they wear the same shoes Thursday and Friday please and if anyone wants to send in Febreeze ( since our shoes will be off as we draw and paint them ) it is always welcome. Thanks for your support in having art here at Ellsworth Community Schools.
PE
8th Grade: Students are off to a GREAT start in PE. I appreciate the positive attitude, work ethic, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm. Catching, throwing, and invasion games will be the focus during week 2. Every period will also include improving health related physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance/muscular strength, and flexibility).
Please encourage your student to remain active this winter. Teenagers need 1 hour of aerobic activity every day and 20 minutes of muscular endurance/muscular strength activities 3 days per week.
SINCERELY,
