Dolphin Tales
A Newsletter for Dove Elementary Families
September 18-22, 2017
A Note from the principal...
What an amazing week we had at Dove Elementary! We had a great turnout at Curriculum Night on Tuesday, and we look forward to continuing to build relationships with our Dove families throughout the year. I had the opportunity to visit classrooms this week, and I am blown away by the amazing learning experiences our Dove Dolphins have each and every day!
This past week, students at Dove Elementary showed empathy for those impacted by the recent hurricanes. “Heroes for Harvey” started when fifth graders decided to help those left in need by the hurricane. Through a towel and coin drive students were able to present 179 towels and $1,326.30 to the victims of Harvey.
After the money was counted, a few students were asked to talk about what they did. 5th grader Parker L. said “Now we need to do it for Florida.”
This is just one of the many examples of the caring and globally-minded citizen we are creating at Dove Elementary.
We Inquire TO LEARN!
We reflect, THEN TAKE ACTION.
We make a difference, WORLDWIDE.
We are proud to be IB.
We are DOVE DOLPHINS!
Don't forget THIS Friday, Lunch with a Loved One will be during all lunches, and Friday night is our All School Picnic at Dove Park. We hope to see you all at both these events!
Proud to be your principal,
Heather Landrum

Lunch with a Loved One
All visitors to Dove must sign in. For this event, we will ask our visitors to present their photo ID and sign in as a visitor in the foyer. Please be prepared to show your ID when visiting Dove. Once identity has been confirmed, you will be issued a visitor/volunteer badge. This must be worn at all times while in the building during our Lunch with a Loved One event. Thank you for your patience as we get all our visitors signed in and ready for lunch on Friday!
Dove All-School Picnic
We are super excited about our upcoming All-School Picnic! This annual event is so much fun and so many of our Dove Families come out to enjoy an evening at the park with friends. Our Dove Dad's Club will be grilling up hamburgers and hotdogs, we will also have popcorn, snow cones, and lots of other fun treats.
We are offering a Picnic Ticket Pre-Sale now through September 20th. Lines to buy tickets for food and treats can get long, so skip the line and buy your tickets online today! Pre-Sale tickets are sold in increments of 10. We will pre-sort all tickets and have them ready for quick pick-up at the PTA Membership table at the picnic.
CLICK HERE TO BUY PICNIC TICKETS!
If you would like to volunteer to help with the All-School Picnic, we will need parents to help with set-up, clean-up, and at various stations through the evening. CLICK HERE to view the sign-up. We appreciate our parent volunteers!
Dove Dad's Club
From the President:
We need members to help set up, cook, help cross streets, and generally help make the picnic fun. In addition to volunteers I need folding tables for prep and serving areas. If you have some to lend us we would really appreciate it. Also, if you sign up to cook, bring your own spatula and a chair for breaks. We will have the grills, propane, food, shade etc. This is a great event and should be a lot of fun. Sign up to volunteer here!
The second item is our 1st DDC meeting for this year. We are going to get together, talk about what Dads Club needs and wants to get done this year, and then hang out and have some fun. I am planing on doing this at Wise Guys Pizza since they were such a good host for the PTA. If you have other meeting locations you want to suggest, let me know. I am hoping to get as many people there as possible so that we can see what is possible for the club this year. Stay tuned for a date and time. I will send that out and create a Facebook event ASAP (please like the DDC Facebook page if you have not already).

Finally, Thank you to all the Dad's who came out for the Doors with Dad's. I thought it was a cool event.

Birthday Treats Policy Change
I wanted to let you know about a campus-wide change regarding birthday celebrations. We love to celebrate our students and staff throughout the year; however, we want to be mindful of health guidelines and restrictions that could impact some of our dolphins. GCISD Health Services encourages and recommends that birthday treats be non-food items, so beginning with this school year, we will not permit food treats to be left at the receptionist desk in order to be delivered to the classroom.
We are not making this change because we don’t want students to be able to celebrate their birthday; we are being mindful of the health and safety of all students. Parents are more than welcome to deliver non-food items such as goody bags filled with pencils, erasers, stickers, gel pens, bubbles, etc. We also would welcome a book donation to the library in the name of your student.
I understand that this is a change from previous school years and we appreciate your cooperation as we make this shift moving forward.
I am looking forward to a great year of celebrations at Dove!
