Summer Reading Challenge

Celebrate summer with the library! Children, teens, and adults are invited to Read Beyond the Beaten Path – take the Summer 2022 Challenge with the Humboldt County Library, from June 14 to August 13.

The summer challenge can be logged either on paper or through Beanstack, the playful app that makes a game of reading, writing, and other activities. Each reader sets their own daily reading goal for the summer, whether that the goal is a few minutes or an hour or three, three books, three pages or three hundred pages.

The challenge includes writing, drawing, or making video book reviews and other fun activities as well as reading. The Library awards a small prize to readers who finish the challenge by August 13. Challenge winners are also entered in a final prize drawing for family passes to the Sequoia Park Zoo and Redwood Sky Walk.

Participants can pick up a paper challenge log at any Humboldt County Library location or go online to set up a Beanstack account for free. Use the Library’s Beanstack site, https://humlib.beanstack.org, or get the Beanstack Tracker app from Google Play or the App Store. A parent or caregiver who sets up an account can add other family members - that makes it easy to track all your readers together.

All summer, each library branch will offer free take-and-make kits with supplies to create a nature journal, start seeds, build a paper campfire, and make friendship bracelets. The first kits will be ready for pickup starting June 14. A new kit will be ready about every two weeks, while supplies last. Check the Library website, humlib.org, and Library social media for updates on kits, programs, and more summer fun.

The 2022 Summer Challenge is supported by the California Library Association; the California State Library; First 5 Humboldt; Humboldt County Library Friends groups; Humboldt Sponsors; Providence, Community Health Investment; Humboldt Area Foundation and Wild Rivers Community Foundation; the McLean Foundation; the Patricia D. & William B. Smullin Foundation; and the Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation; plus Root 101, Los Bagels, and other local businesses. See the flyer below for more information.
