Superintendent's Message
5/21/2021
Dear JUHSD Community,
As we enter into our final week of the school year, classes are winding down, communities are opening up, and students are getting ready for summer. I look forward to seeing staff and students next week, and am excited to have the opportunity to congratulate many of our graduates in person.
Today, we held a Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the opening of a new 450 seat Performing Arts Center outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, along with 16 new classrooms, a new woodshop, a technology lab, and a fabrication lab for our CTE programs at Westmoor High School. This is part of a larger modernization, paid for with voter-approved Bond funds from 2014 Measure J, of our Westmoor campus. This project included new athletics fields and tennis courts that are complete, and modernization of the existing school facility, which will be completed in August. Thank you to Stefanie Phillips, our Director of Bond/Construction Projects, for her hard work and dedication to our district. She has done an amazing job with this project. The building is beautiful and I am thrilled that our students and staff will come back to this space in the fall. Thank you, as well, to the Westmoor staff and students for their flexibility and patience during construction. Is it never easy to have dust, noise, and disruption, but it is doubly hard during a pandemic.
Please be sure to read the May 18 Board Meeting Highlights linked in today’s update. Of note is the update on our Serramonte Del Rey Development. Please visit https://serramontedelrey.org/ to find information about this exciting revitalization and find the links to the slides and presentation in our Board Meeting Highlights.
While I will send my final Superintendent Message of the year next Friday, I want to thank you for your support this year and for the advocacy you have shown for your children. I know it has been difficult. We look forward to the fall when we hope to resume a sense of normalcy in our schools.
Have a great weekend!
Warmly,
Toni Presta
Superintendent

Career Technical Education - Student Highlight
Jefferson High School student, JR Robles, took part in the Junior Achievement Company Program this past school year. This program empowers high school students to fill a need or solve a problem in their community and teaches them practical skills required to conceptualize, capitalize, and manage their own business venture. Throughout the process of building their own company, students collaborate, make crucial business decisions, communicate with multiple stakeholders, and develop entrepreneurial knowledge and skills. Community volunteers and mentors provide real-world guidance and experience to the student-led startup.
JR and his teammates created an interactive discussion deck product, Talk-in-a-Box. The focus of their product is to encourage face-to-face interactions and discussions that promote community building. Congratulations to JR and his team for placing in the top 3 to move on nationally. We wish JR all the best in the fall at UCLA.
