Mindsets, Behaviors, College and Career Readiness --- Oh, My!!
Join Dave Ford and Sue Schirmer for a day-long session focusing on the connection between the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors and data-driven postsecondary readiness strategies to improve postsecondary enrollment, persistence, and completion rates. Learn how to utilize ASCA's themes of Leadership, Collaboration, and Advocacy to impact Systemic Change for student outcomes in college- and career-readiness.
Participants will become familiar with and engage in activities to integrate the new ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors Standard into their K-12 comprehensive school counseling programs. The day will include a specific focus on how to access and use data to improve student transitions to career with specific focus on postsecondary education and training programs. Participants will explore the school counselor's role in leading and supporting college and career readiness efforts at the individual student, classroom, building, and district level, including elementary, middle, and high school programs.
David Ford is Postsecondary Success Lead at Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency in Bettendorf, IA. His work history includes serving as District Counseling & At-Risk Coordinator, 15 years as a School Counselor in New York and Iowa, and 3 years as a Behavior Intervention specialist in California and Oregon. He holds licenses in New York and Iowa in School Counseling and is licensed in Iowa as a PK-12 Principal/Special Education Supervisor and Evaluator.
Dave's background also includes 11 years of teaching in numerous graduate programs in counseling and education. For the past 6 years, he has served as a Clinical Adjunct Professor at Drake University, teaching courses in counseling, education, and research. Mr. Ford has researched and extensively presented on the topic of college and career readiness in schools. In 2014, he received the Iowa Educational Research and Evaluation Association award for best practice in action research for his work, "Where are they now? A longitudinal analysis of postsecondary educational outcomes of a Midwestern suburban school district's alumni, 2007-2014." His research interests include social justice and equity, particularly as they relate to college and career readiness and the K-12 understanding of postsecondary success outcomes. He recently completed coursework for a PhD in Education with a concentration in Educational Leadership at Iowa State University and is working on a dissertation studying how public school districts use longitudinal data systems to improve postsecondary outcomes for students.
