20 years of Pride at Colleyville Heritage High School

Panthers,
Another great week is in the books at CHHS. I had the honor of attending a prescreening of Once Upon a Mattress, the only word that I can use to describe it is, WOW!! It is truly amazing to see the talent that our students have and the commitment of the long hours they have put in to create such an amazing show. There are showings tonight, tomorrow, and Monday, and I would highly recommend you attending one of the performances. On Tuesday night this week, we were able to celebrate a great milestone for Coach Dianna Sager. During her head coaching career she has amassed 400 victories!! This is a huge accomplishment not only for Coach Sager, but a representation of the tradition of excellence that has been established within our girls basketball program. Have a great weekend and GO PANTHERS!!

The first thing I enjoy about Colleyville Heritage High School is the library. The staff in the library provides us with a wide variety of books in many genres which can tempt any reader. Oftentimes I find myself stopping by the library in the morning to pick up a new book, and I know that there will always be a book that will interest me no matter what mood I am in. Even though I have always been an avid reader, I have found myself going through books voraciously this year due in part to the library and the books found there.
The second thing I enjoy about Colleyville Heritage High School is the teachers who work hard to make sure that their lessons are informative and easy to understand. This gives us the best experience possible and allows us to thrive and continue to aspire and work towards our goals. They plan unique and untraditional lessons that will stick with us throughout our life, and this makes them such an important aspect of the school and my learning journey.

NEW ADVANCED ACADEMIC COURSE OFFERING FOR 2017-18!!
The College Board’s AP Capstone(tm) is an innovative and engaging college-level program for high school students that complements and enhances discipline-specific AP courses. It’s built on two new courses—AP® Seminar and AP Research—that immerse students in the practice of critical skills needed to distinguish themselves in college and life. AP Capstone is the pinnacle of the high school experience, encouraging a passion for learning and transforming students into curious, collaborative, and independent thinkers with skills that are valued and sought after by colleges and universities.
The first of the two Capstone courses (AP Seminar) will be offered to rising juniors in the 2017-18 school year. We encourage all interested students to register for the AP Seminar course when making course selections in Arena Scheduling. For further information or questions, please contact Laura Koehler, Kelli Mann, or Ed Wevodau, or visit the AP Capstone Web site.
Teens, Sex, and Choices
Aim for Success, Inc., will present their nationally acclaimed program to the students and parents of Colleyville Heritage High School on Thursday, Feb 2 and Friday, Feb 3. The Aim For Success motivational programs have educated over two million teens, parents and educators across America during the past 18 years on topics such as abstinence education, drug prevention and anti-bullying.
The upcoming program called XTREME is for high school students only and addresses the problems of teen pregnancies and the escalating STD epidemic. This straight talk – in-your-face program will clearly demonstrate to the students that avoiding sexual activity until marriage provides freedom from pregnancies, STDs, and regret while giving them the freedom to fulfill their dreams and goals!
The Parent Program provides an opportunity for parents to also learn new information as they preview the student program. “This is a must see event for anyone concerned about the problems associated with teen sexual activity,” said Marilyn Morris, President of Aim For Success. Community guests are welcome to attend.
If you do not want your child attending this assembly, please fill-out the "Opt Out Form" found here, and either email it to Kevin.Starnes@gcisd.net or bring it to the front office. The deadline to turn in the "Opt Out Form" is Wednesday, February 1st.

Advanced Placement exams
Taking the Advanced Placement exams is an important part of all AP courses. Colleyville Heritage HS desires that all students take AP exams for the AP classes that they have taken. Scoring well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a significant amount on tuition.
For the 2017 AP exams, students at Colleyville Heritage HS will be registering online. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access.
This year each AP exam costs $97.00. This cost is slightly higher than some neighboring schools due to online registration. Colleyville Heritage HS desires that every student be able to take their AP exams. Students requiring financial assistance should contact Robert Sikora, Robert.Sikora@gcisd.net, in the Colleyville Heritage High School to learn more.
Online Exam registration will begin on Tue, Jan 3, 2017 at 8:00 AM and end on Sun, Feb 12, 2017 at 11:00 PM. In order to register, students should click on the link provide on the school website or visit www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/441408 to register .To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered.
Colleyville Heritage HS is excited to offer families the convenience of paying exam fees online at the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card or debit card available before beginning registration. Paying online is a great way to make sure that payment has been made while avoiding mailing payment.
Here are the important dates for the registration process:
- Tue, Jan 3, 2017 at 8:00 AM - Registration Begins
- Sun, Feb 12, 2017 at 11:00 PM - Registration Ends
- Wed, Feb 15, 2017 at 11:00 PM - Registrations that have not been paid for will be cancelled and exams will not be ordered.
Please contact Robert Sikora, Robert.Sikora@gcisd.net , if you would like to register for an exam not listed or have any questions.
ACCEPTED Wall
Exciting New Endeavor! CHHS PTSA is collaborating with CHHS AVID to create a space on our campus that will showcase the accomplishments of our CHHS seniors and where they have been accepted to college. It will be called an ACCEPTED Wall. The purpose of the ACCEPTED Wall is to highlight exceptional college campuses all over the United States and beyond, and to start a conversation about how and why to choose a school of higher learning.
Here is how students and parents can help:
1. We would like pennants from colleges that you visit. While you are on a tour, pick up a pennant to donate. They can be dropped at the CHHS office beginning Tuesday, January 17th .
2. When you receive acceptance confirmation and decide on a college, scan your letter and send it Dawn Treese at dawn@treese.org. These will be framed and hung on the ACCEPTED Wall.
Questions? Contact Dawn Treese at dawn@treese.org
CHHS PTSA
CHHS PTSA is updating our bylaws and standing rules. The changes to both documents can be found at http://www.chhsptsa.org. A summary of the changes are listed below. These changes will be voted on at the February general meeting. Please email Leslie Williams at parliamentarian@chhsptsa.org with any questions. Standing Rules 1. Change Board of Education/Legislative Liaison to ADVOCACY. (Strictly a title change--to put us more in alignment with what they are calling this position at council and state level) 2. Change "duties of vice presidents" to ADDITIONAL DUTIES OF OFFICERS, ADD Treasurer: Shall be in charge of developing and maintaining the annual budget. Shall be responsible for all deposits and disbursements. All checks written will require two signatures. 3. Scholarships: Add line that indicates No graduating senior parents will be allowed to serve on this selection committee. Bylaws PRESIDENT-ELECT
NEW in 2016 is the option to add President-Elect to your bylaws. Should a PTA choose to amend their bylaws to add this officer, the position would be available for election in spring of 2017.
When a President-Elect is included as an officer, the term limits for both President and President-Elect are limited to one year meaning they can not be re-elected to the same position. The President-Elect would serve as an aide to the President and chair meetings in the president’s absence, could have other duties, and would then automatically become President the following year.
The first year of implementing this change, the nominating committee would need to slate a President and a President-Elect but for all future years, only the President-Elect would be elected. When the members elect a President-Elect, they are also electing their future President.
President-Elect holds the same privileges as President in that they are an ex-officio member of every committee except the Nominating Committee and the Financial Reconciliation Committee.
