Let's Celebrate Mrs. Walsh and Mrs. Manns!
Mrs. Walsh is our primary receptionist and handles attendance records, office traffic, financial paperwork, supplies, guest/visitor security, state reporting, substitutes, and Miss Nass. Mrs. Manns is our secondary receptionist and she handles discipline records, discipline supervision, athletics, transportation (school and athletic routes), bus passes, student records, and Mr. Smith.
Thank you, Mrs. Walsh and Mrs. Manns, for all you do for us. We love you and appreciate you!
ILEARN THIS WEEK
Happy Math Week! All SMS students will take ILEARN math tests on Tuesday and Thursday.
We'll take the longer computer-adapted test (CAT) on Tuesday. The test is UNTIMED and is expected to take about 90-100 minutes. We'll all start in the morning and use our iPads. One hour after we start the test we'll all take a stretch break before we get back at it. Students that do not complete the test in the time allotted will finish the test during elective on Wednesday. The first section of the test is a non-calculator section. Once that is completed, students will enter the calculator section. SMS will provide scratch paper. Students will bring fully charged iPads, pencils, a print book (in case you finish early), and a growth mindset!
Thursday is our performance-task (PT) test. This test is only 50-70 minutes and will also be on iPads. This test will feature multi-step problem solving using mathematical processes. This test is also untimed so students can finish the next day if needed.
Good luck to all students and staff on our FIRST EVER ILEARN TEST WEEK!
Smartwatch Update
To help us promote a secure campus, reduce cheating, and decrease distraction, SMS students are to keep personal mobile devices in their lockers in the OFF position. Since smartwatches have similar functions, they are also subject to school management.
Here are the rules of the road regarding these devices.
- All smartwatches must be registered in the SMS office. This will allow us to know the capabilities of each watch and to clearly communicate rules with the parent/guardian and the wearer. Registration forms are in the office.
- Owners are solely responsible for the care and security of their devices. SMS assumes no responsibility for theft, loss, or damage to the device.
- Smartwatches with cellular capability must be in airplane mode and incapable of independent reception or transmission of communications.
- Smartwatch bluetooth must be disabled.
- Smartwatches must be in silent mode.
- Students that are distracted by their smartphones during class will have them confiscated and taken to the office for parent pick up. If this happens a second time, students will forfeit their ability to wear a smartwatch during class.
If you have a smartwatch, please pick up your registration paper in the office today and return it to the office tomorrow. All existing student-owned smartwatches should be registered by Wednesday. If you get a new smartwatch later this spring, swing by the office and begin the registration process! If you have any questions about your smartwatch, ask Miss Nass.
SMS Welcomes a Full-Time SRO
We are very excited to welcome our new School Resource Officer James Vires! "Officer James" is a Scottsburg High School graduate and a seven-year member of the Scottsburg Police Department. He will take his certified SRO training class in September.
Officer James will assist with campus security and will help in investigations of police matters such as tobacco, e-cig/vape devices, drugs, alcohol, sexting, and fights. Students can ask Officer James for advice regarding community and school matters.
Be sure to welcome Officer James when you see him this week! And be sure to thank SCSD2 and the Scottsburg PD for partnering in this program!
