News from the Counselor!

Winter Break is around the Corner...

It's hard to believe we are only a few weeks away from Winter Break! It's this time of the year I reflect on how incredibly fortunate I am to be a part of this amazing Findley Community. It is my joy to be your child's school counselor and I thank you for sharing them with me. I hope you all have a wonderful winter break and make many happy memories with family and friends!

I also know this time of year can be difficult for many reasons. If you need support in any way, please reach out to me via email or this confidential survey and we can work together. You can also call me at 503-356-2100.

Thank you again, Findley Community!

Guidance Lessons Grades 3-5

One of my favorite parts of my day is visiting classrooms to talk to kids about different kinds of problem solving strategies and different ways they can regulate their emotions throughout the day.

This month, I will be visiting 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms.

The focus this month is on Mindfulness and recognizing when we might need to tune in to ourselves and use a strategy. This ties into our Zones of Regulation curriculum and challenges students to recognize the signs in their minds and in their bodies when they are dysregulated (blue, yellow, red zones).

In 3rd grade we practiced some grounding techniques along with other mindfulness exercises such as deep breathing. We read the book "I am Peace" and reflected on times to use mindfulness exercises.

In 4th and 5th grade, students will talk about situations that could cause some dysregulation. They will then go through a series of mindfulness and calming strategies to help them move back to the Green Zone. Students will also reflect on what strategies work best for them and understand that regulating ourselves is not a one size fits all!

Learning About Empathy and Kindness

Here are a few really cute videos to share to help kids gain an understanding of empathy and kindness.
