Synopsis
Holden Caulfield leaves his prep school after failing out of the school. Fearing his parents reaction, Holden flees rural Pennsylvania to New York City, where he notices and analyses the hypocrisy of adulthood.
Holden Caulfield
The protagonist and narrator of the novel, Holden is a sixteen-year-old junior who has just been expelled for academic failure. Although he is intelligent and sensitive, Holden narrates in a cynical and jaded voice.
Phoebe Caulfield
Holden's little sister. According to Holden, she is the only person who understands him. Holden loves her dearly. Phoebe recognizes that Holden is his own enemy.
Mr. Antolini
Holden’s former English teacher. He is young, clever, sympathetic, and likable, and Holden respects him. Holden looks to him for guidance. He might be a pedophile, but it's never said outright.
