Middle College Update 9/12
Hello, Families!
Just a quick reminder that the MC teachers are in the faculty office in 5-112 every morning from 8:30 until class starts, ready to help students with MC assignments, college assignments, college applications, or whatever support they might need. Our new location is tucked away and off the beaten track, but we are still here and accessible to students every day.
Back to School Night/Parent Meeting
We will hold BTS from 6:30-7:15pm on Friday, September 26. Each teacher will provide a brief overview of her curriculum. Following our presentations, Julie DiBona is hosting a Parent Meeting from 7:30-8:30. We hope to see you there. You should have received the invitation from Chris Brandin yesterday.
College Readiness Workbook

This great little guide explains to students and families how to meet college eligibility requirements. It is exactly what we’ve been covering in our CCR classes. It includes a four year academic plan, financial aid information, a glossary of common terms, and links to online resources.
Juniors
The PSAT will be administered at Middle College on Wednesday, Oct. 15 during our MC class time. Chris Brandin will send out more information soon.
Seniors
In her CCR section, I am helping students decide where they should consider applying. Jen has started the college applications process in my section of the CCR class--we're working on Personal Statements now. If you're interested, I attached below a speaker video all seniors watched, as most are applying to at least one UC. You’ll notice that your seniors may be getting a little stressed out about applications. We’re here to help :-)
Seniors still have several opportunities to take the SAT or ACT for college applications. The next opportunity to register for the SAT is Oct. 11 (registration due Sept 12 TODAY); the next opportunity to register for the ACT is Oct 25 (registration due Sept 19).
U.S. History
Today the first paper was due. This was a short essay analyzing documents to identify American ideals. Almost all my students submitted their essays on time. Great job students!
School Loop
All MC teachers are posting daily agendas for our classes — simply click on the calendars for the different courses and you can monitor what we are doing most days. If students are absent, they should check the calendar to see what they missed.
To register for a parent account:
1) Go to http://seq-ca.schoolloop.com/
2) Choose SUHSD Cañada Middle College on left side.
3) Click on Register Now.
Guest Speakers
We’re still looking for guest speakers who are willing to talk to our students about their jobs, how they began their careers, and the pathways they took (education, training, etc.). If you, or someone you know, is able to talk to our classes, please let me know. We’re hoping to schedule guest speakers in our first time block (12:30-1:20)
Parent Volunteers
I will be sending out an invitation to all Middle College parents in coming weeks to volunteer to be an “admissions reader” for one or two seniors engaged in the college applications process. I’ll explain more later, but no experience is necessary and all can be done via email and it’s ultimately a big help to our kids…so please think about accepting that invitation when you receive it in the coming weeks.
We’re looking forward to ending our week today with time for students to socialize and get to know one another. Juniors are bringing snacks this time.
Thank you for entrusting such wonderful students to us! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. And have a wonderful weekend!
