Friday Feedback - Managing Energy
CKH, Relationships and Student Engagement
"John Hattie (2012) proves that the teacher's prediction of student success has the greatest impact on student achievement (1.62 effect size = 4 YEARS WORTH OF GROWTH). The evidence is clear that a pessimistic attitude and low expectations are much more damaging than NCLB or ESSA" - Anthony Muhammad, Transforming School Culture, 2009
Managing Hyper, Overly Stimulated Students
We are in the brain growing business both academically and behaviorally. As a former science teacher brain research is very interesting to me especially as it applies to middle school behavior - I realize that it is not interesting to everybody. In short, proper behaviors are learned, not innate. This is why CKH "moves" & reteaching is so important for students to learn from their mistakes. We know that some students aren't learning a lot of the lessons they should at home in regards to appropriate behavior and appropriate social skills, as they may not have the proper role models or social experiences to learn the behavior from those experiences. Again, that's why CKH and solid relationships in supportive environments are so crucial to our success = this is why reteaching forms new synapses in the brain (connections) and the frontal lobe develops over time from experience and from mistakes.
**Proper behaviors must be taught and modeled but it all starts with the relationship so that they have the desire to want to learn from their mistakes. These reminders are especially critical as the end of the year approaches when energy levels will be through the roof at times. Failing is learning.
We know that our students are more stimulated than ever before in history and they are constantly connected through and over stimulated by social media. Our students are more connected than ever before, like it or not, and with that we need to provide more and more engaging opportunities for them through various applications of technology, authentic learning and collaborative team product based projects. If nothing else, engaged students are less likely to be "troublemakers" because they are engaged in something interesting and their brains are busy.
The article attached below has some awesome ideas for "Bell Ringer" activities to engage our students right from the get-go to reduce the likelihood of off-task and frustrating adolescent behaviors.
