SCHOOL'S OUT!!
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers in the OLC Community,
THE SEASON OF ADVENT
This year, Advent starts this Sunday, November 27. Advent reminds Christians of the sacred meaning of Christmas. Despite the secular preparations taking place, eg buying presents and going to parties, Advent reminds Christians to remember and prepare for the birth of Jesus. For each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, we light a candle on the Advent wreath as we say an Advent Prayer. This weekend we light the first candle, which is purple, and symbolizes hope. It is sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

SEMESTER 2 REPORTS
OLC utilises SEQTA for parents to access student reports for children in Pre-Primary to Year 6. If you have not already done so, please log in to SEQTA to ensure you are able to access your child's report. If you have remembered your username but forgotten your password, please click on the ‘Forgot your Password’ link and an email will be sent to you.
Please note the password reset link in the email will expire within one hour.
If you do not know your username, please contact the school. New families to the school and children in Pre-Primary who do not have an older sibling were sent welcome emails in Semester 1.
If you did not follow the instructions in the Welcome Email, the link expired within 7 days. Please contact the school if you need assistance.
Semester Two Reports will be available to all families on Friday 9 December.
YEAR 6 REPORTS
Parents of students in Year 6 and children who are leaving OLC at the end of this year will need to either print off their child’s reports or save them as, as reports will not be able to be accessed once children leave the school.
Pre Primary Cultural Excursion with Josh Whiteland
On Wednesday 2nd November the Pre-Primary classes enjoyed a cultural excursion to the Quindalup area with Wadandi custodian Josh Whiteland from Koomal Dreaming. Josh shared his amazing knowledge on the Aboriginal 6 Seasons and how this influences what is foraged/hunted and eaten. While on the beach the children learnt about various symbols used by the Wadandi people and practised drawing them in the sand. The children were especially interested to see various artefacts and tools used in this area and heard how many of them are used. Finally, the children loved hearing various animal sounds and music made using the didgeridoo and participated in traditional emu and kangaroo dances. With a morning filled with sunshine and amazing new knowledge, the Pre-Primaries returned to school hungry yet fulfilled.
PLEASE SLOW DOWN!
A reminder please to slow down in the school carparks. Now that the weather is improving, we have larger volumes of students walking and riding to school. Please keep onsite speeds under 10km an hour. Please also remember to give way to school buses entering and exiting the carpark. Thank You.
NO CANDY CANES PLEASE
Please support us and refrain from distributing candy canes over the final few weeks of the year. This helps us prevent a sugar overload during the final days and assists in prolonging the lifespan healthy growing teeth. It also minimises plastic waste flying around the school. We would also ask you to consider the environmental impact of distributing class sets of Christmas cards which are only signed with a name. To make the gesture meaningful, it would be wonderful if you could encourage a thoughtful message if you decide cards are necessary. Thank you.
IMPORTANT TERM DATES
A reminder, students will finish this term on Friday, 9 December.
Students will commence in 2023 on Wednesday, 1 February.
RE NEWS
Year 6 Graduation
The Year 6 students will celebrate their graduation with a Mass on Friday the 9th December at 9.00am. At midday the whole school will gather at the hall for a farewell assembly. Any parents and friends associated with the Graduates are more than welcome to attend either or both events!
WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE
Three brave members of our school community are shaving their locks for cancer! Can you help? Here’s why:
Over the past two years I have witnessed and heard the heartbreaking stories of three families and their arduous journey of leukemia treatment with their children. The strength and resilience of these children and their families was truly inspiring. At times I feel there is little anyone can do to help except just be present. However, one thing I can do is grow healthy hair. So, on the 11th December I will be having my long locks cut off and will be donating the hair to Sustainable Salons to make medical wigs for cancer and alopecia patients. These wigs help give people confidence back as they embark on their journeys. And then the rest of the hair will be shaved off to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation who help give those facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need and fund vital research. Clancy's in Dunsborough have kindly put their hand up to host my shave event. The support shown so far has been amazing and I now have two more willing participants to join me on the 11th – thank you Zoe Mant (3L) and her Mum Erin for both being brave and shaving with me!!
So, I am asking anyone able to please dig deep and donate at https://secure.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/registrant/FundraisingPage.aspx?RegistrationID=872581 or to come along for some fun and donate at the event at Clancy's on the 11th Dec 2022 at 2.30pm to witness these much loved locks come off! Thank you in anticipation!

CRAZY SOCK DAY
The students enjoyed participating in crazy sock day last Friday, and we raised a total of $465.00 for Catholic Mission Australia, which this year helps the people of Ethiopia. Many thanks to the OLC Community for your generosity.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2023
Each year at OLC we take time to be thankful for our blessings and to assist those local people in need by contributing to Christmas Hampers distributed by the St Vincent De Paul Society. This year boxes will be in the shared work areas of the school and families are invited to contribute specified items. Please look out for the labelled boxes in the following areas in the next few weeks and give generously to support others in what can be a difficult time of the year. Thank you.
K & PP: Christmas goodies, chocolates, bonbons, puddings, decorations, small children's gifts, and stocking stuffers etc. No lollies or candy canes please!
Years 1, 2 & 3: Pasta sauces, meal kits, rice, biscuits, crackers, sauces, jams, condiments, (basically any non-perishable good food, which can be used beyond Christmas. No baked beans or tinned vegetables please 🙂).
Year 4, 5 & 6: Toiletries, chocolates, tinned fruit, non-perishable fruit juices, nuts, small gifts, pampering items, gift vouchers (Kmart, coffee, etc).
Thank you for helping to make someone’s Christmas a little more special this year.
