Special expressions with tener
-tener + ganas de + infinitive
to feel like...
Ex.
Tengo ganas de nadar. - I feel like swimming
when tener means 'to be'.....
-tener hambre
-tener sed
-tener...años
-tener calor
-tener suerte
Ex.
Tengo hambre. - I'm hungry.
Tienes sed. - You're thirsty.
Ella tiene 15 años. - She is 15 years old.
Tienen calor. - They are hot.
Tengo suerte. - I'm lucky
Direct Object Pronouns (DOP)
Ex.
I have the book. - I have it.
-in Spanish, you must choose the DOP that matches the noun
Singular DOP's:
me (me), te (you), lo (him, it, ud.), la (her, it, ud.)
Plural DOP's:
nos (us), los (you, them, uds.), las (you, them, uds.)
-after the DOP is chosen, there are 2 options on where to place it
Option #1: right before the conjugated verb
Ex.
the noun is el libro....the DOP to match is lo
Yo tengo el libro. - Yo lo tengo
Option #2: attatched to the infinitive (if there is an infinitive)
Ex.
the noun is los shorts....the DOP to match is los
Voy a llevar los shorts. - Voy a llevarlos.
Present Progressive
Estar + present participle
-Present Participle ending depends on the ending of the infinitive
-if the infinitive has an 'ar' ending, replace it with 'ando'
-if the infinitive has an 'er' or 'ir' ending, replace it with 'iendo'
-if the stem of the infinitive ends in a vowel, replace the ending with 'yendo'
Ex.
escuchar - escuchando
llover - lloviendo
vivir - viviendo
caer - cayendo
Sentence Ex.
I am swimming. - Yo estoy nadando.
You are running. - Estás corriendo.
-some verbs are irregular and have a stem change in the present progressive form
Ex.
decir (e-i) diciendo
dormir (o-u) durmiendo
