As your children’s first teacher, you’re the most important influence in their lives! What you do at home matters! Read on for some monthly tips to support your relationship with your child and his/her learning!
If you want your child to talk to you about the big stuff, then you need to listen and show you care about the “little stuff”, which feels big to them. Try starting a routine with your family of sharing everyone’s “rose” (the best part) and “thorn” (the hardest part) of the day.
If you want your kids to be more flexible eaters, try finding some time to let your children help cook a meal. Helping with the cooking often results in kids being more willing to try new things, and it gives them a chance to practice some math skills such as counting and measuring. Just make sure you leave enough time, because it will probably take a little longer, and you don’t want to be rushed!
If you have some time to wait at an appointment or while driving, try having some fun with your kids by doing round robin storytelling. Start it off with a statement like “Jess was really thirsty, but she couldn’t get a drink.” or “Ava was walking through the park and suddenly she stopped. She couldn’t believe her eyes!” Then have your child take a turn adding a sentence or two, going in a circle until the character solves whatever problem you created. This supports understanding story elements (characters, setting, problem and resolution) as well as their creativity!
The Department of Education has updated the Family Toolkit & Newcomer Toolkit.
The English Learner Family Toolkit was created to help families choose education services that meet their child’s needs. U.S. educators, elementary and secondary school teachers, principals, and other school staff can also share the toolkit as a resource for English learners and their families. The Family Toolkit is available in four languages!

Long Range Facility Planning
On May 2, 2023, the Plano ISD Board of Trustees approved the new Strategic Roadmap that is inclusive of a long range plan.
As such, the plan includes a strategy to study:
- Current facilities,
- Enrollment, and
- Programs to determine efficiencies,
- Long range planning and
- Programmatic equity.
This study will:
- Assess all of our schools,
- Analyze the student enrollment at each school,
- Evaluate high-quality programming,
- Consider whether the building is being used effectively and
- Determine whether resources are fairly distributed to support all students.
The result of the study may lead to restructuring, or "rightsizing," school sites to better serve students.
Rightsizing may involve:
- Closing school buildings,
- Adjusting attendance boundaries within the feeder pattern to allow for a more equitable disbursement of district resources.
Ultimately, the study of school building capacity will be for the purpose of supporting thriving schools, classrooms, students, teachers, and school leaders.
