ROBERTSVILLE REVIEW
October-Novemver
Message from the Principal
Greetings Ram Nation,
I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather as we begin the second quarter. Again, I would like to thank the entire RMS community for a wonderful start to our school year. You have made me and my family feel very welcome in Oak Ridge, and I am grateful to be a part of Robertsville. Our staff and students have been able to quickly get down to business at the beginning of this second quarter. It is a pivotal time for our students, and from my experience, the time where you tend to see the greatest growth academically. In an effort to make the most out of this critical period of the school year, I would encourage your family to make timely attendance a priority.
While there were many celebrations in our first quarter, I would like to see our attendance improve across the board. We had approximately 11% of our student body with 5 or more absences for the first quarter, which would have them fall into the category of chronically absent. While illness and family emergencies are certainly a part of life, we want to encourage our students to be present each day if possible. If an absence is unavoidable, please be sure to send either a parent or doctor note with your child when they return, so that we can avoid moving toward truancy proceedings. As a reminder, when your child hits 5 unexcused absences, we are required to conduct an attendance conference and complete an attendance contract. Any additional unexcused absences past the point of the contract could result in an attendance assessment and possible truancy referral.
We are excited about our learning in the second quarter!
As always, please contact the front office if you have any questions or concerns.
Climb the Mountain,
Kirk W. Renegar Ed. D.

Get to Know our SRO
by Rambler reporters Julie Baez-Shim and Lindsey Weatherford
Officer Luethge is our new School Resource Officer, the one who deals with serious interactions of discipline. You have probably seen him in the halls; you probably straightened up your posture and tucked in your shirt right? Well we’re pretty sure everyone did, but we are here to tell you that you shouldn’t! At our interview with Officer Luethge, we found out that he may look intimidating in his uniform, but he’s a really cool guy!
Officer Chris Luethge has been a police officer for 14 years, but before that, he did a few other things that may shock RMS students. He coached swimming, was a camp counselor and teen crisis counselor, and even played in a band! He said that he deeply enjoys working with kids and has for a long time. It is what he loves. He also said that swimming, music, and being a teen counselor has helped him become a better SRO overall. To him, a conversation is like a rhythm, like music and swimming; one person speaks and the other person speaks. It’s all about communication.
He was into music for a long time. His major was actually originally jazz guitar before he transferred to police studies. He changed because he and his friend used to be in a band, and one day his friend invited him over for dinner. He then realized that his friend’s dad was a police officer. After getting to know his friend’s dad, he realized that what he thought about police officers was all wrong, and that a person doesn’t have to be uptight to be a police officer. He slowly got more interested and began to study to become a police officer.
Officer Luethge was not born in Oak Ridge. He was born in Knoxville, then moved here for a little while, and then moved to Clinton where he has lived ever since. He said that his favorite thing about Oak Ridge is that “there is a nice blend of people” and that the school system is amazing. He spoke about our partnership with NASA briefly, commenting on how lucky we were to have such a special opportunity.
Don’t be scared of the SRO, and if you feel like it, then talk to him! Approaching our new School Resource Officer is fine, and if you do, maybe you can get to know him better just like we did.
Author Visit
On Thursday, November 8, Robertsville will host Marc Tyler Nobleman. Author of numerous non-fiction titles for middle grade readers, Mr. Nobleman will present to 5th and 6th graders and some specially invited 7th and 8th graders in the morning. He will also conduct a writer’s workshop with students from Ms. Kinder-McMillan’s Creative Writing/Journalism class and Mr. Smith’s Book Club.
Mr. Nobleman is best known for his two books on the creators on Superman and Batman. The Boys of Steel details the early lives of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two high schoolers who developed the character of Superman during the Great Depression and helped to launch the superhero phenomena. Bill, the Boy Wonder tells the story of Bill Finger, one of the creators of Batman. Nobleman’s research for this book became the subject of a documentary that is available on Hulu. RMS sold copies of his books during the book fair; no books will be sold during the week before the visit. However, parents can order his books from Amazon or buy them from Books-a-Million. We will have an autograph party for students who have books. Proceeds from the Scholastic Book Fair support author visits at Robertsville. In the spring, author Kathleen Burchinshaw will present to 8th graders on her historical novel about Hiroshima.
