There are some who smirk at the idea of New Year's Resolutions. Understandably, we see the promises we make to ourselves year after year and spy a cliche. What... with the crowded gyms and stores that will be hocking their workout wear and tools for organization. Sure, it's easy to get cynical.
But there is something about taking some time, after we've unwrapped gifts...to wrap up a year. How can we sum up all the moments and feelings within a year? The collection of these moments that contain anxieties, losses, gains, elation and excitement. There is value in examination- of ourselves, our direction, our habits - where we came from, where we went- and where we want to go.
The book "The Longevity Project" states that conscientiousness is actually "the best predictor of longevity". So let me break it down.
Conscientious is defined as:
- controlled by or done according to one's inner sense of what is right; principled:
- careful and painstaking; particular; meticulous; scrupulous: conscientious application to the work at hand.
One of the fascinating findings was not just that conscientious people make healthier choices, but they "find their way" to happier marriages, better friendships, and healthier work situations". It's not that they stumble onto health, but they pursue it and shape their pathway to health.
Dan Buettner, author of "The Blue Zones" also speaks of the importance of "finding your tribe"- and having meaningful relationships for the paradoxes that life presents to us.
As much as a Doctor can give you information on how to take care of yourself; community and as Buettner puts it, your "tribe" matters.
2016 will provide many opportunities for you to partake in groups here at Lifestyle Medicine Solutions. We will have a CHIP class at the office beginning in a month or so- and we have free weekly classes beginning next week with Dr. Dysinger and Dr. Cono discussing having a healthy weight for life. Be sure to check our monthly calendar for specific times. Dr. Cono will also run his BeAlive Wellness Class at the Rock Church beginning on January 21.
