Monday Minutes

January 28, 2019

Since we are at the mid-point of our year, this is a great opportunity to check in about your personal trade hours. Here is some important information about your personal trade hours:

All campuses will be closed on April 22nd in exchange for Personal Trade Hours that can be earned from June 5th, 2018 through April 12th, 2019. The learning that teachers choose to attend for their 7.5 Personal Trade Hours must be approved by their principal/supervisor and should support their Teacher Professional Goal, Campus Improvement Plan, identified student needs, or in some way impact instructional practice.

All teachers are expected to pursue professional learning on an on-going basis, however; if you choose not to record these hours or accrue hours in this manner by April 12, 2019, you must submit for unpaid leave on April 22, 2019. You will not be able to use state or local personal leave for this absence in accordance with PISD Board Policy (DEC Local). 4, 2018.

I have attached a link to the Professional Learning page at the bottom of this newsletter. This page has a wealth of information about several different ways you can earn professional trade hours (Twitter chats, Online courses, etc.) There is a very helpful section titled "Professional Learning Update" towards the bottom of the page. This update has an informative video about trade hours, some general information about trade hours, and frequently asked questions about trade hours. Please take some time to read through this so that you know what to do and how to document your hours. Please let me know if you need help selecting your professional learning.

PISD Education Foundation Employee Campaign Update:

The campaign began last week and forms were placed in your boxes. Please give if you wish (completely optional). Please turn in form to Wendy Miller's box by February 4th. If everyone turns in their form (even if you do not wish to give this year), we will earn a jeans week. Our school goal is $1175. Thanks to everyone who has already turned in their form!

Instructional Minute

We have so many wonderful resources for writing available to us. I wanted to take a moment to highlight the book, Ten Things Every Writer Need to Know, by Jeff Anderson. Now that we are halfway through the year, you know:

1. Your students' writing strengths

2. Your students' areas of growth in writing

3. Your writing TEKS

This book is divided into ten chapters. Each chapter covers one of the ten things every writer needs to know. I encourage you to dig into this book and see if one of the chapters might be helpful to you when focusing in on what your students still need to learn this year in writing.
