A Note from Mr. Bender
It was a fun and busy week at the Mill. The thrill of the holiday season is in the air, and we are excited to finish out the year on a high note! Teachers have many engaging activities planned during the next two weeks of school.
Picture packages came home this week for students that pre-ordered back in October. Picture Make-up Day is January 13, 2021 for any student that missed the original picture day or would like a retake. Digital students will also have their picture taken on this day between 8:30-10:30 am.
Have a wonderful weekend!

WMES Spelling Bee Winner!
As part of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ family engagement initiative, the school district seeks to empower parents with tools that allow them to help their children at home. Our AKS at Home project provides math and language arts resources to support families of children in grades K-5 so that they truly are partners in their children’s learning. This support is available for families to access in the format that suits them and their schedule best. They can attend live virtual meetings, view recorded information at a time that best fits their schedule, and gain tips and suggestions on how to best help their children through tip sheets on a wide variety of topics.
We invite our families to sign up for a virtual session to learn more about how they can support their children.

Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
Every month, we focus on a character trait to instill great character into our cubs. The character trait for the month of December is Caring. Caring means looking out for others and treating them with kindness. As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited caring the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.

2022 Georgia Picture Book Nominee Spotlight
Pokko and the Drum by Matthew Forsythe
When Pokko plays her drum in the forest she suddenly finds herself surrounded by an entire band of animal musicians. Forsythe's playful writing is a wonder of its own, but the watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations beautifully elevate the tale, creating a warm and wonderful world that any woodland creature or small child would long to inhabit.
Reading Rewards
Reading logs for the month of December are in the Friday, Dec 3rd weekly folders. Students will return their December reading logs AFTER the winter break. I hope your child will find lots of time to read and log their minutes over the holidays!
December logs should reflect 20 different dates in December, with at least 20 total minutes of reading for each date. Incomplete logs will not be accepted. Students can read independently or with their parents at home. After completing the monthly requirement, logs are returned to the homeroom teacher. Parent initials are required in order to verify the reading.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, refer to the reading rewards link on the media center page of the school website or contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
