Can the internet be TMI for younger children?

Children are like "sponges", they absorb and retain information well. The internet and technology is no exception. Children learn quickly how to navigate the computer. But, it is very important for children to navigate safely. Commonsense.org gives 3 points to consider for teaching children about internet safety: 1) Get permission from an adult before accessing. 2) You only communicate with those persons you already know. 3) There should be sites the child is limited to.
The Louisiana Department of Education has established goals for technology for the classroom. Included in the goals are the training of students in technology. The goals for readiness are outlined to assist educators in the training of these students. The goal is to begin introduction of concept of technology in kindergarten. These concepts are introduced and reinforced. The training should include the computer and internet policies. The students will learn how to operate the computer and what is considered "acceptable use". The students are taught "compliance"and "responsibility". The goals incorporate a emphasis on "consequences of inappropriate use".

A-B-C Searching (K-2)
The website Commonsense.org gives a very good example of skill building. The website's example shows how using the ABC's to locate pictures is a good exercise for youngsters. The kindergarten to 2nd graders are learning to read and spell. These type of exercises are good ways to reinforce basic skills.

Keep It Private (K-2)
Commonsense.org advocated procedures to "safeguard" students information. According to the website, the importance of the a username. Sharing should be restricted. No sharing of personal information, such as, passwords. Personal information should be explained.
Children should remember the internet is just like their "neighborhood". Commonsense.org reminds us that the same rules of behavior apply on the internet neighborhood as in the neighborhood in which we live.
