We are Learning
Reading and Writing
Our focus after Spring Break in reading and writing has been poetry. During reading, we have began dissecting poems and figuring out what different pieces of a poem are called. We are noticing through our reading that there are SO many different types of poems. It is going to be fun discovering them all.
After taking the first few days of the week finishing up our Young Author books, we dove into writing poetry as well. On Wednesday we looked at common objects around the classroom. We used our senses to describe what the items look, sounded, felt, and even smelled like. The next day we looked at our items through a poet's eyes (You may have seen these neon glasses this week). These glasses allowed us to see objects in a different, more creative manner. Taking time to look at things and write about them will help us as we continue to write poetry.
Math
Our math continued to deal with geometry and different variations of it. This weekend we talked about shapes and partitioning those shapes with straight lines into even parts. We then discussed how we can use these newly segmented shapes into fractions. We also learned a new word: array. Many of the square and rectangular shapes that we were creating were actually arrays: a shape that has the same number of items in each row and column.
