SHISD Mid-Week Message
Promoting Great Things in a Great School District
Snow Day
I hope everyone was able to take a minute and pretend to be a kid again and enjoy the snow we had in Longview today. I would like to thank the teachers and staff for being so flexible and understanding with the school closings and weather delays. No one likes the schedule disrupted and you all have done an outstanding job taking care of the students and each other as we get through this stint of Winter Weather. -Steve Snell
Kudos
- From Mrs. Mayfield. We are so proud of our 1st and 2nd grade students for their participation in Jump Rope for Heart. SH Primary raised $9670. 00 to help fight heart disease. This was dedicated to Mrs. Qualls and two of our students who have had open heart surgeries.
- Congratulations to Panther Softball players Sydney Johnson and Carson Robertson. Both were named to last weekend's Carthage All Tournament Team.
From Mrs. Shurbet. I want to recognize the maintenance staff for going the extra mile in getting the ice broken up and scraped off the sidewalks before our delayed start today. Further, Mr. Miller arrived at school earlier than required in order to clear the doors for the cafeterias so that the cafeteria ladies could get into the buildings and prepare breakfast.
From Mrs. Shurbet. I also witnessed Mr. Miller serving as a security guard on Friday night when I returned from training in Houston. He was checking doors to be sure that they were locked and noting any lights that were still on. Mr. Miller also assisted us by opening the gate to the bus yard and getting the school vehicle returned to the proper location allowing us to stay out of the weather as much as possible. Great Job Mr. Miller and kudos to your staff!
From Suzanne Mitchell: To celebrate Dental Hygiene Month, the Primary had an awesome guest speaker at Fabulous Friday last week! Alex Mack, Dr. Chris Mack’s daughter, spoke to us about good dental hygiene. Alex is a 14 year old Judson Middle School student who made a New Year’s Resolution to pursue healthier habits. She gave us great tips on caring for our teeth. She inspired us all to be kinder to ourselves by making healthy choices each day! Our first graders also had a visit from Dr. Ellis, a dentist from Gladewater. Dr. Ellis shared ways to take good care of our teeth. He visits our campus each year, and we enjoyed hearing the great tips he gave us!

Primary Students Hosted Technology & Maint Dept Valentine's Day Luncheon
Love was in the air on Friday as Primary students celebrated Valentine’s Day. Children serve as host and hostesses for their parties, learning about being kind and showing good manners.
Spring Hill Primary held their annual appreciation lunch for maintenance, technology and cafeteria staff last Tuesday. Teachers decorate the science lab and prepare food to express their appreciation for all these people do for us every day – taking care of our technology needs, keeping our buses running, getting our children transported safely, feeding all our children, and keeping our building clean and safe.

East Texas Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse presents to our Students
It was a pleasure to have ETCADA (East Texas Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse present to the Spring HIll High School student body last Friday, February 20th. ETCADA offers Substance Abuse Service and has a great educational program to deter students and adults from using any type of wet drug or dry drug. Using research - based curricular, ETCADA programs are aimed to influence all students through evidence - based studies to "Say No" by providing prevention education and skill training.
Cartooning coming to Spring Hill Jr. High March 3rd, 2015
Cover illustration, by Ben Sargent, from Cartooning Texas: One Hundred Years of Cartoon Art in the Lone Star State is coming the SHJH on March 3rd.
Cartoons in Texas often focus on hotly contested, controversial, and colorful political campaigns—usually for the governor’s chair. In Cartooning Texas: One Hundred Years of Cartoon Art in the Lone Star State you will meet a fascinating array of flamboyant politicians, ranging from the controversial Governor Hogg to the remarkable Pappy O’Daniel.
Cartooning Texas: One Hundred Years of Cartoon Art in the Lone Star State is both a cartoon history of Texas politics and a history of political cartooning in Texas. It tells the story of one hundred years of events in Texas from 1890–1990 in a form that is wonderfully visual and precise. This exhibition serves as a compilation of the visual commentaries of journalists about the issues and people most important to Texans during the one hundred year period. Cartooning Texas features political cartoons and informative text. P
