Math Team Events By Ms. Nicole Flynn
On Wednesday, Ms. Flynn took 9 students on a math team field trip and to compete in a vocational math meet. On the field trip they went to "Escape the Mystery Room" in North Attleboro to work on team building, problem solving, and quick thinking. They did two mystery rooms: Special Agent and Sherlock's Library. In both rooms, students needed to look for clues to solve riddles and puzzles to undo locks and combinations in order to escape the room. In the level 3 Special Agent room, the team escape just at the end of the 50 minutes. In the level 4 Sherlock's Library room, the team escaped with 20:02 minutes remaining which was a new record. The team photo is now on the wall of fame.
After the escape room, the team went to Tri-County to compete against other vocational schools in a jeopardy style math competition. Ten different vocational schools competed with a total of 23 teams at the meet. Blue Hills fielded two teams. Our teams finished in 11th and 12th place overall. The students also designed their own t-shirts for the competition that were the talk of the competition. Made by graphics, the shirts had the BHR math team logo (BHR with the h made from two pi symbols on top of each other) with the phrase "You have to be odd to be #1" on the back of the shirts.
Check out the math team pictures sent by Ms. Flynn! The nine students who attended were all seniors: Claude Noailles, Erin Young, Kasey Zaleski, Steven Casey, Brendan Krumins, Jeff Adams, Matt Goldstein, Damien Phoenix, and Raquel Beaudoin.
Peer Rival: Norfolk County District Attorney's Office: Adventures In Respect
On Thursday April 26th 2018, five 10th grade students represented Blue Hills Regional Technical School at the Team Rival "Adventures In Respect Challenge."
This initiative is sponsored by the Norfolk County District Attorney's office and the Hockomock Area YMCA.
This challenge is one part of a year long initiative designed for students with leadership qualities. These students we're selected. They take what they learn and pass it on to their own peers about making good decisions in life.
Students had a chance to meet DA Michael Morrissey, Norfolk County District Attorney and his assistant DA Jennifer Rowe who makes this all happen.
The students earned 5 hours of community service and learned a variety of communication and leadership skills throughout the day.
The five students are Destiny Taylor, Natalia Ruffin, Matthew McCarthy, Brieanna Rosa, and Francis Kelley. They are enrolled on the Criminal Justice Program at BHR. Information and photos courtesy of Mr. Welch, Lead CJ Instructor.

Quito and Galapagos Trip: April 13 - 22, 2018
Some of the students and chaperones did experience some altitude sickness in Quito. We encouraged them to drink more water! This did not stop any of us from having a good time.
Our young men were also very helpful to passengers helping them load carry-on bags into the overhead bins on the planes, buses, and boats. Shout out to Claude Noailles and Andrew Bryant. Also, to Claude for climbing through my window twice when I locked myself out of the room in the Galapagos!
On day 3, we traveled to the Galapagos island of Santa Cruz. We took a bus, a plane, a boat and then another bus! Our first stop was at a local ranch where we walked around and visited with giant tortoises. Then we visited the Charles Darwin Station, explored around town and then headed to the hotel for dinner.
On day 4, we got up very early and headed over to Isabela island in the Galapagos. We took a two hour speed boat ride over. The ocean was rough and several students got sea sick. Once we arrived, we took a "chiva" to the hotel. A chiva is a truck without windows and bench seats. We checked in to the hotel and then went on a nature trek to see pink flamingos, mangrove trees and other natural life. Then we ate lunch, headed to the beach and some of our chaperones and students played soccer with the locals. The Clasby jello challenge was also a real hoot.
On day 5, we took a chiva to the volcano Sierra Negra and hiked to the top. It was very hot and we drank at least two liters of water each. It took about an hour to reach the top of the giant crater. The group took photos, rested and then trekked back down. We went out for lunch, went to the beach again, ate a local dinner, walked around the town and then went to bed around 11 PM.
On day 6, we walked around Tintoreras Inlet and were inches away from sea lions sunning themselves on a park bench! We also saw sea turtles, white tipped sharks, blue footed boobies (bird), and so much more. We also went snorkeling, which was amazing! After that we went back to the hotel, then did a little shopping in the town before we had to get ready to head back to Quito the next day. Sometimes when we woke up there were spiders and geckos in the room!
Day 7 was a big travel day back to Quito. We had to take a bus, boat, bus, plane and a bus! When we got to Quito we went to a bakery and had some pastries before dinner.
On day 8, in the morning we went to market and shopped for crafts, handmade crafts and souvenirs. Then we went to the orphanage in Quito. The children ran into the arms of our students, played games, and tried to communicate. Ms. Lavoie and I went in with the den mother and held the babies who were under a year old. It was very moving and there were lots of tears when we had to say goodbye to the children. Our students gave the orphanage children hope.
On our last day we checked out of our hotel and went zip-lining. Then we had pizza for lunch and went to the Papallacta hot springs spa where we spent time relaxing in the hot and cold spring fed pools. We shared our last meal together, celebrated Mr. McGrath's birthday and then headed to the airport for home sweet home!
Special thanks to everyone who supported this trip and to Ms. Peach for all the behind the scenes planning. Our chaperones were truly dedicated, fun and worked hard all week. Great job to Mr. Cleggett, Ms. Lavoie, Mr. McGrath, and Mr. Foley. Great memories forever.
