Buckhannon Upshur Christmas Store Dinner - November 7th
The Buckhannon Upshur Christmas Store Dinner is an event where eligible parents/guardians of children from birth to 18 can purchase one new toy or gift for each of their children from the "store" that matches the needs of each child in their family. Parents feel pride in knowing they purchase the toys and gifts their children will enjoy. There is also a wide variety of free gift items from which parents can choose for each child.
Volunteers are needed at the Christmas Store Dinner to help set up the store and cleaning it up afterwards. Volunteers are also needed to help wrapping gifts, assist clients, straighten up, etc. throughout the week of the "store" at the Buckhannon Moose Lodge.
If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Christina Jones 304-924-5352 or 304-642-2089.

Our Children, Our Future Community Forum - November 10th
On Tuesday, November 10, West Virginia Wesleyan College will host a public forum beginning at 5:30pm for Our Children, Our Future, a local organization seeking policy change for childrenin West Virginia. Through community organizing and dialogue with state and local representatives, the event, which is open to the public, will focus on taking action to reduce child poverty.
Thirty percent (30%) of West Virginia boys and girls under age live in poverty. Our state also has the highest rate of 16-24 year-olds who are neither in school, nor in the labor force. Research in brain development shows that social, emotional and cognitive development is shaped in early childhood and has a lifelong effect. Poor children are 5 times more likely to have children outside marriage, twice as likely to be arrested, and nearly 3 times as likely to have severe health problems. Poor children also end up earning incomes less than half those of their counterparts.
Our prison population has tripled in the last 20 years, and we spend $23,000+ on each inmate – roughly the cost of providing full-time quality child care to 5 young kids. Taking care of ourmost vulnerable children is not only the right thing to do; it is the best way to help our state’s health, welfare, and economy in the long run. To do this, we are building an organized, statewide voice of kids, families, and allies to advocate for the changes we need.
We invite you to join the local Our Children, Our Future team and assist in the campaign to end child poverty. Bring questions and/or ideas to the session. For more information, please contact Melissa Buice at buice_m@wvwc.edu . The Wesleyan event will be held in the Performing Arts Center from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

The Mask You Live In - November 12th
November is Masculinity Month. The WE LEAD Gender Equality team will start off our month by showing The Mask You Live In.
The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Ultimately, this documentary illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

Bottle Cap Collection Drive - through November 16th
Did you know that plastic bottle caps are NOT recyclable in this region? Bottle for bottle, that adds up to a lot of waste! Help us by placing your plastic bottle caps in the smaller bins adjacent to the regular recycling bins! The collection bins are labelled with a "Place Bottle Caps Here" sign.
The dorm floor that collects the most plastic bottle caps between now and November 16th will win a prize for their floor! Later in November we will have an assembly day to make a mural out of the collected bottle caps. Please help make Wesleyan a greener place by contributing!
If you have any questions you can contact Mark Leadingham or Tim Bristol.
