Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
The school year is well underway and we have almost reached another key point on our calendar -- Parent-Teacher Conferences. Just like last year, we will have both a spring and fall round of conferences for the 2018-2019 School year. Our first conferences will happen on the evening of Wednesday, October 10th and all day and into the evening of Thursday, October 11th. In order to allow for conferences all day Thursday and to make up for the 8 evening hours of conferences, students will have NO SCHOOL on both Thursday (10/11) and Friday (10/12) that week!
For those new to Meadow Park, our conferences take place at scheduled times with your student’s math, humanities, and science teacher and our specialty staff (Spanish, PE, Arts, etc…) are available by drop-in in the library. As in the past, we will be using Sign-Up Genius for the online sign-up. I will be sending a separate email on Monday, October 1st at 4 pm with a link for families to begin signing up for conferences.
As you can imagine, conference times fill up quickly. It is helpful to sign-up as soon as possible to ensure there are multiple options available. When signing up, be sure that you have your student’s math, science, and humanities teacher names available and find them in the column on the left before looking for times on the right-hand side. This is particularly important for our parents in the Summa program and some of our 6th-grade parents, who can have different math teachers paired with the same humanities and science teacher.
Our Jog-a-thon is also happening next Friday, October 5th throughout the school day. We will send some additional information as the day gets closer, but please be encouraging your student to participate in the only PTO fundraiser of the year! Almost any donation amount gets a prize (McDonald's Fries, Ice Cream, and 2 games of Bowling) and we want to see all of our students participating and enjoying the day. Check out the article below for details! We have a spirit week all week, and the days are listed on the calendar below.
We hope your students are looking forward to a fun-filled spirit week and Jog-a-thon and our staff looks forward to partnering with you and discussing how your student is moving forward academically soon.
Make it a great week!

Global Awareness and Service to the Community
The internationally-minded IB student is a critical and creative thinker. The IB is committed to teaching and learning through practical, real-world experience. Principled action, as both a strategy and an outcome, is an expression of this commitment. Action involves learning by doing , which enhances learning about self and others. Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service—making a positive difference to the lives of others.
This week in advisory students learned about how to give back to their community and discussed potential ways to take action within and beyond the school community. Ask your students how they plan to support their community during the Jog-A-Thon events. In addition, many community members will be present and speaking to our students as they share opportunities for students to be able to give back. We have members from the Oregon Food Bank, THPRD, The City of Beaverton, and many more coming on October 5th.
Additional service opportunities are posted on our webpage along with a link for students to use when reflecting on their service learning and tracking service hours. It is suggested that each student complete 5 hours of service per semester.
Technology Corner
Have you and your son or daughter created a charging station at home?
When students received their CB in the library at the beginning of the school year, we talked about creating a charging station in their home. Our message was to put their backpack next to the location where they would charge their CB, every night. Ideally, students get into a daily routine of having their CB charging while it is in or near their backpack next to the outlet. When they leave for school in the morning, they just zip up the backpack with a fully charged CB and they can (and should) leave their chargers at home! Please remind your students of this routine!
