Lion's Den News
May Edition
Words from your Principal
Dear Parents,
Never did I think I would end this school year so abruptly. I am saddened to say that this school year is coming to an end on May 22, 2020. I want to thank all of you for becoming your child’s teacher. I know this has been a stressful time for all involved, but we’ve made it. I am so proud of our Lakewood family and how we have all worked together as a team to get through this monumental time in our life.
Starting May 4, 2020, your students will receive electronically the NLRSD Unplugged. If you can’t receive this electronically, there will be hard copies put into the grade level tubs outside of the school. NLRSD Unplugged is a way to step away from your devices. It is project-based learning that will allow your child to work at their own pace on fun activities both indoor and outdoor and will reduce the amount of time spent behind a screen. Teachers will still have daily face-to-face interactions through Google Meets.
We hope to return in the fall, but we are under the Department of Education’s and the Governor’s guidance. We will keep you updated on this throughout the summer. We hope all of you will finish out strong with the unplugged packets. We hope all of you have a wonderful summer break and stay healthy and safe.
Love to all of you!
Teacher Appreciation Week 2020
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
is May 4th through 8th
It is quite unusual this year since we will not be together to do our typical activities.
Here are some ideas:
May 4th
Your teacher is a STAR! Make a star for your teacher and tell why she/he deserves to be on the “Hollywood Walk of Fame”. You can make a quick video or a picture and e-mail* it to your teacher(s).
May 5th
Send your teacher a “Virtual Hug”! Make a video of yourself giving your teacher(s) a virtual hug. Send it to her/him via e-mail*.
May 6th
Thanks for the MEMORIES. Write a story about the BEST DAY you had this year and how your teacher made that memory special. You can e-mail* it to your teacher(s).
May 7th
Are you a poet and didn’t know it? Teachers LOVE getting POETRY from their students. Write a poem and send it to your teacher(s).
May 8th
Let’s “rap this week up in style.” Record yourself rapping or singing a song written just for your teacher. Send the video to your teacher.
If you want to send a card to your child’s teacher(s), please mail to:
Lakewood Elementary
1800 Fairway Avenue
North Little Rock, AR 72116
Cards may also be dropped off in the container on the porch.
Teachers will be given cards on May 5th.
*Teacher e-mail addresses are on our school website in the staff directory.
Lakewood has such a creative group of students!
We know you will have great ideas to express how much your teachers mean to you!
Students to Unplug
Elementary parents,
We want to take a moment to thank you for your hard work in helping us maintain the learning process during this pandemic. We know this task was difficult and, at times, overwhelming. We appreciate your efforts.
NLRSD's elementary students will be going "unplugged" the last three weeks of school, beginning May 3. We are supplying three weeks of fun, engaging activities that will not require the use of technology. These activities will be focused around physical science, life science, and earth science. There will be one activity a day along with a short reading passage and a math activity. Teachers will still meet virtually with students to discuss what they have discovered and investigated.
Packet activities are divided into two grade level bands. One packet is for K-2 students and the other is for 3-5 students. These packets will be sent from teachers via Google classroom or paper packets can be picked up beginning 4/30 at your child's elementary school.
Again, we appreciate your help during this time to keep students engaged. We believe the last three weeks of school will be fun, engaging, and will provide a much-needed break from technology
NLRSD Elementary students: Get ready to UNPLUG!
Sincerely,
Lori Smith
Executive Director of Curriculum, Assessment, and Accountability
