The Sneek Peek
Oct. 24th, 2016
Class Curriculum
First Grade - We continue to be 'Word Warriors' by using prefixes to decode and understand unknown words. We will also be sharpening our comprehension strategies by engaging in cross checking, rereading, and monitoring.
Second Grade - In reading this week your little ones are going to be making inferences about what their character's point of view is, how it may differ from another character's point of view, and why points of view can change.
Writer's Workshop
Our class is going to continue to work on creating a non-fiction book! Each child has chosen an animal they want to write about. We are exploring facts and how they differ from opinions, constructing categories to organize our facts, and writing parts of our books - including a table of contents. First Graders are organizing their facts using headings , while Second Graders will be developing well organized chapters.
At home you can help by working with your child to print off some pictures they could bring in to include in their book and read with them to find facts they may want to write about as well!
Math Workshop
First Grade - We continue to study and construct 2D shapes. Children will be comparing shapes using the language: parallel lines, diagonal lines, and vertices.
Second Grade - Have your students told you that they are doing algebra? That right! When they are solving a problem by finding an unknown number they are performing ALGEBRA! This week will will continue our spook-tacular math skills by solving one- and two-step comparison word problems. A resource your kiddos can use to practice at home is http://www.mathplayground.com/tb_addition/thinking_blocks_addition_subtraction.html
On this screen you can click on the 4th and 5th selection for comparison one-step or comparison two-step problems.
Social Studies
This week we children will be introduced to the election process. We will learn about rights, responsibilities and the presidency. We will use PBSKids.org/youchoose to meet our presidential candidates and explore what it would be like to be the president.
