IOWA-GRANT'S PANTHER PRESS
OCTOBER 2021/ IGSD NEWSLETTER
DISTRICT OFFICE
This Is Us...
Happy October!
Each month I will share information about our district's history and highlight some of the wonderful experiences that happen on and around our campus. The following excerpt was adapted from our school's website in the History & Demographic section.
Iowa-Grant School District is located in Southwestern Wisconsin in both Grant and Iowa Counties. The District serves students from the Villages of Cobb, Linden, Rewey, Livingston, and Montfort, parts of Edmund, and portions of the Towns of Wingville, Castle Rock, Eden, Highland, Lima, Liberty, Linden, Mifflin, and Clifton. The District encompasses about 195 square miles in one of the most prosperous agricultural areas of the state.
With approximately 110 employees and an enrollment of over 700, the Iowa-Grant District provides a comprehensive program for students in early childhood through twelfth grade. Facilities include the High School, which opened in 1960 and is noted for its unique architectural features and open concept design, and the Elementary/Middle School (IGEMS), which opened in the fall of 1992 on the same 40-acre site.
IGEMS is like a small village and offers its 500 students free breakfasts/lunches (USDA funded), all day-every day kindergarten and 4 year-old kindergarten, a large library media center, daily physical education activities, and a positive learning environment that enhances student learning in reading, language arts, music, mathematics, art, science, health, social studies, and many other courses. Our students also have an opportunity to pursue a wide variety of explorations such as band, chorus, athletics, spelling bees, and mathematics teams.
IGHS has a unique design and its front entrance opens to a beautiful upper mall area with two staircases that lead to the auditorium. The newly remodeled gymnasium, floor, and bleachers is the perfect setting for sports activities and school assemblies. The high school offers many additional opportunities for students outside of the classroom, including many clubs, organizations, competitions, and athletics. We are proud of our amazing staff members throughout the district and beautiful school buildings. We hope you are too.
As we begin October, I'd like to reach out to the various community groups and organizations that are part of the Iowa-Grant School District. If you would like to know more about our schools and programs, please call, email, or invite me to your next gathering. I'd be happy to share more about our Panther Pride. Thanks for all you do for our students and schools.

Dear Iowa-Grant Families,
Iowa-Grant School District is participating in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Seamless Summer Option (SSO) for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year. This means that our school provides free meals to all students! This program provides additional support and flexibility for our district to continue serving meals to children while maintaining safety measures and managing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Included in the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are nationwide supply chain and product availability shortages. Disruptions are due to a lack of availability of raw ingredients and labor to produce, unload, and transfer food products. Some food and/or beverage products normally provided to students may not be available or arrive as scheduled. Due to unforeseen circumstances, last-minute menu changes and product substitutions may occur. Be assured meals will remain balanced, healthy, and plentiful. We ask for patience and understanding as we do our best to meet the needs of your children.
Menus are always posted on our district website. Please contact me with any questions at (608) 943-6311 extension 3013 or email me at bhugill@igs.k12.wi.us.
Sincerely,
Barb Hugill
Food Service Supervisor Iowa-Grant School District

During their weekly visits to the library in October, 2nd-4th grade students will participate in the 2021 Global Read Aloud Picture Book Study. This year we will read books by the award winning author and illustrator, Duncan Tonatiuh. He grew up in Mexico and graduated from Parsons School of Design and Eugen Lan College in New York City. His illustrations are inspired by Mixtec art. The Mixtecs are an indigenous group of Mexico. The purpose of the Global Read Aloud is to create a shared read aloud experience with other children all over the world. I will connect our students with students at other schools mainly through the use of Padlet and Flipgrid, which will be new technology tools for some of our students. In addition to sharing Tonatiuh’s picture books with elementary students, sixth graders are being introduced to The Barren Ground by David A. Roberts. It takes place in Canada and is described by the book’s publisher as “Narnia meets traditional indigenous stories of the sky and constellations.” It is the first book in the Misewa series. The Global Read Aloud was started by Pernille Ripp, a middle school teacher in Oregon, Wisconsin in 2010. It has grown from 150 kids in its first year to over 1,000,000 (she quit counting in 2016 when it became that big!).
I choose to participate in the GRA each year because I want IGEMS students to realize we are all part of something bigger, and we can connect with others through a shared experience such as reading. Books bring people together! For this reason, I encourage parents to continue reading aloud to their kids at home, even their older children. For information about the value of reading aloud check out these articles: Why Reading Aloud to Kids Helps Them Thrive and The Hidden Benefits of Reading Aloud - Even for Older Kids.
Happy reading!
