FROM THE HEART OF MRS. ROGERS
The Importance of Wonder to our Student's Future Success
What are your plans when you graduate?
These are questions that circulate in the air year after year in the halls of a school. They really are interesting questions when you think about it. A mere one-hundred years ago the choices children had were different. Gone are the days when someone would work as a cobbler, typewriter repairman or even a Blockbuster store manager. Many of you reading this may not even really know what a typewriter is, or ever popped in a VHS. I still remember a day of antiquing when one of my own children asked me what that closet thing was. . . as she was pointing to a phone booth! Think of that - we carry our phones around in our back pocket and when I was young you stepped into a booth and inserted a quarter if you wanted to call someone while you were out in town.
I say all of this to say - it's important to learn to wonder, to dream, to fail forward, to think critically and creatively, to problem solve and know HOW to think rather than WHAT to think. The days of knowing versus knowing how to get and use information are upon us. Some studies show that the jobs our elementary students will fill as adults haven't even been thought of yet! That's not such a ridiculous thought when compared to the idea that when I graduated high school the internet wasn't even a thing!
Time waits for no man. We are in a great partnership to ensure our students are prepared for a future not yet written. Let's equip them with the skills necessary for success! Let's encourage them to wonder, to create, to try, to dream, to never fear failure for in the trying. . . .they may invent the future!
