Letter from Logsdon
~Here's what's happening!~ September 14, 2018
Where we have been
This past week we have been focusing our writing craft on personal memories. We have used poetry to help us connect our thoughts to people, places, and objects in order to evoke emotions so that we can write beautiful, powerful, meaningful words. We quick write our ideas and then choose something to focus on and expand. It has been a lot of fun watching them connect to memories and personally craft a memoir. I have also encouraged them to use figurative language withing their personal pieces. It all came together today as they typed a 100 word (no more no less) memoir. Focusing on a precise amount of words guided them to choose carefully what was important to share about their memory and how they felt. If you would like to see what they wrote, ask them to show you in Google Classroom.
If your student did NOT finish posting their memoir in Google classroom today, they have until Wednesday, September 19th. However, we will not spend any more time in class for this.
Where we are going
While learning grammar techniques, such as effectively using transitions, we will move into personal narrative writing. Writing the memoir was our narrative "warm-up" to help with focus before we take a memory to a more lengthy piece of writing. I have attached a slide presentation that explains my expectations of a personal narrative. Another grammar focus that goes well with personal narrative is verb tense. Students tend to switch between present and past tense while writing. We will focus on being consistent. The final copy of their personal narrative will serve as a test grade for this six week. I will post due dates as soon as we get started and I can gauge progress.
