McMath Counselor Connection
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year
BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR AN EMAIL REGARDING STATE MANDATES
Denton ISD is committed to making students aware of important topics including bullying behaviors, relationship violence, and mental health and wellness. Additionally, mandates from the state of Texas require school districts to provide prevention and education concerning these topics. The intended schedule is as follows:
Suicide Prevention- September
Substance Abuse Prevention- October
Bullying Prevention- November
Relationship Violence Prevention/Sexual Assault Prevention- February
You will be receiving an email with more detailed information in the coming weeks. This will include an option to have your child opt out of one or all of these lessons. We look forward to working with you to discuss these important topics!
Quick Start for Productive Learning
Is your student struggling to complete all of their assignments?
Connected Learning Parent Tips:
How to promote your student taking responsibility of their learning.
- Have your student take the lead on structuring their school day. While there will be times your student will be required to be online, there will be plenty of opportunities for your student to take ownership of their day. Ask questions to lead them to what will work best for the way they learn, but also promote productivity. (ie: How often will you need breaks? What environment (silence, music playing, etc.) do you work best in?) Creating a timetable for the day while using the answers to these questions promotes critical thinking about time management, as well as empowering your student to take charge of their learning. Work with your student to continue using this structure until it becomes an established routine.
- Encourage your student with language that reinforces that they are capable and can make decisions that best benefit them. Speak to your child the way you want their inner voice to speak to them. Put focus on the effort your student is placing on their assignments and school day structure.
For example:
“I noticed that assignment was challenging, but you decided not to give up until you were happy with the work you produced.”
“Wow, you were prepared for today’s assignments and stuck to your plan.”
“I trust you to figure out a solution to getting all of your work done on time.”
