Notes From the Principal's Desk
Our staff has been having such a wonderful time getting to know your kids these past few weeks! It is so great to be back together 5 days a week and see all our friends return from distance learning. Building relationships and creating classroom communities is the foundation of a successful year for your child. I am so proud of how our staff and students have been working together to create this foundation for the teaching and learning ahead of us!
We have some fantastic events happening at Hillcrest this month, including our Green Apple Day of Service, our Scholastic Book Fair, a School Spirit Week, and a Pumpkin Patch in our garden. Looks like October is going to be a "spooktacular" month for our Herons!
As always, thank you for your support as part of our education team!
Respectfully,
Paula Seaman
Hillcrest Principal

Impact Aid Forms Due Monday Oct. 4
Today your child will bring home the 2021 Impact Aid Form. This form needs to be completed and returned to school on Monday, Oct. 4. It provides vital information for determining how much Impact Aid funding Oak Harbor Public Schools receives from the federal government. Last year, we received over $5 million from Impact Aid.
For help completing the form or to see samples of completed forms, please click here.
The Federal Impact Aid Law was passed to help make up for lost tax revenue to local districts due to non-taxable federal property in their boundaries. The amount of Impact Aid is determined by the number of students with parents who live or work on NAS Whidbey Island or other federal property, including Native American lands and schools on federal property (Crescent Harbor, HomeConnection, and Hand-in-Hand). About half of our students meet these criteria. To qualify for funding, we need a completed survey form for every student attending our district's schools,

PURPOSEFULL PEOPLE FOCUS FOR OCTOBER
Empathy: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another.
Empathy is a crucial skill for being in a community with others and a powerful skill to develop in personal and professional relationships. We are focusing on a few key pieces of Empathy: knowing how we feel (and having the language to describe those feelings!), understanding what others are feeling, and listening to others well so that we can connect in more meaningful ways! We will celebrate what makes us different and find the amazing things that bring us together.
