A Newsletter for Dove Elementary Families
August 21-25, 2023
A Note from the principal...
Hello, Dove families!
We had a SUPER start to our school year at Dove! On Day 1, our teachers were already engaging students in content learning! They also spent time reviewing the 4Be's and our Behavior Expectations for learning and movement around Dove! Be sure to check your child's folder every night and talk with your student about their behavior sheet!
Your child's teacher will provide you with LOTS of information that you will need to know in order to help your child be successful this year at Curriculum Night on Thursday, August 31! We will start at 5:00 in the cafeteria and introduce our staff to our families. Then, we will have a Title 1 Parent Meeting and a PTA meeting in the cafeteria before dismissing to go down to classrooms.
We have two Curriculum Night sessions in classrooms (identical information in both) for families with more than one student.
- 5:45-6:15 (Session 1)
- 6:30-7:00 (Session 2)
Also at Curriculum Night, you will have the first opportunity to sign up for Clubs at Dove! Our teachers sponsor extracurricular activities for our students to engage their interests! Sign ups will be available at Curriculum Night, and this year there will be limited space in each club! You don't want to miss it!
Proud to be your principal,
Volunteer Background Check - ACTION NEEDED
All visitors who wish to visit at Dove or be a part of events such as field trips, Friendship Day, class parties, Field Day, Book Fair shopping, the Fun Run, and more need to have a cleared background check every year.
We encourage ALL VISITORS to do this at the beginning of each school year to avoid any conflicts with attending events at our school!
More information about the process and the online application can be found HERE. Safety is everyone's responsibility, and we appreciate everyone taking time at the beginning of each year to complete the background check process!
Please Bring Your ID!
- Students enrolled in prekindergarten or kindergarten are required to attend school and are subject to the compulsory attendance requirements as long as they remain enrolled at a campus.
- Students/families who do not meet compulsory attendance will be referred to the GCISD Attendance Review Board and/or referred to Tarrant County Court for truancy.
- To receive credit or a final grade in a class, a student in kindergarten–grade 12 must attend at least 90 percent of the days the class is offered.
- Up to 8 days per year (4 per semester) may be excused by a parent note for missed attendance beyond medical, approved excused, and statutorily exemptions.
- Vacations taken during the school year will be coded as unexcused absences.
- All absences whether excused or unexcused count toward the 90% rule.
Read more about the Laws Governing School Attendance HERE.
Can I eat lunch with my child?
We welcome visitors during lunch!
Due to seating capacity, we only have space for a certain number of visitors during each grade level lunch. Please sign up on the spaces below to ensure that you have a spot to sit at lunch! Once the slots on a particular grade level are filled, we won't have the space for additional visitors on that day during that grade level lunch.
Teachers appreciate having a few weeks at the beginning of the year to practice lunch routines and expectations. We will begin having visitors at lunch the week of August 28.
You can sign up by clicking the link below and scrolling to find the day you want to visit and your child's grade level (the sign up is organized by date and lunch time).

Welcome, Officer Day
GCISD is proud to announce a partnership with the City of Grapevine and City of Colleyville, along with the Grapevine and Colleyville Police Departments, to employ a full-time School Resource Officer at all GCISD campuses.
Officer Day will be the School Resource Officer at Dove! Officer Day spent the first week of school meeting students and visiting classrooms and lunch!
Below is information regarding Standard Response Protocols. GCISD partners with the I Love U Guys Foundation and uses the Standard Response Protocols (SRP) to respond to any situation or emergency that takes place at school or in the district. Click here to see the Parent and Guardian Standard Response Protocol Information Sheet.
Each campus will conduct drills throughout the school year. These drills are based on the Standard Response Protocols of Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, and Hold. GCISD developed one additional protocol known as Clear.
Completion of the drills is mandatory for each campus during the first two weeks of school, so that students and staff are prepared. Drills help us learn and know how to respond in the case of a real emergency at school. Our drills also help us to check certain equipment and responses. Our emergency management leaders on each campus will work with students and staff to complete our drills and document the results.
Emergency personnel in Colleyville, Euless and Grapevine work in partnership with GCISD to ensure we keep all students and staff safe.
Your child's classroom has a SRP Poster displayed. We will be discussing these and practicing these drills the next two weeks of school. More information about Safety and Security in GCISD can be found at https://www.gcisd.net/page/safety-and-security If you have any questions, GCISD Director of Emergency Management and School Security, Allen Smith, is very receptive to speaking with parents about our safety practices and may be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Going Outside During HOT Weather
- Students should be hydrated prior to outdoor activities and drinking water shall be easily accessible.
- Students shall not have recess or physical education classes outside when temperature or heat index exceeds 100 degrees. The campus administrator or designee will notify or announce an activity advisory to all applicable staff.
- Teachers are advised to use caution on other days when the temperature or heat index is high. Limiting recess to no more than 15 minutes and ensuring that students have access to adequate water prior to and/or after outside play is essential.

All School Assembly Friday
Our first All School Assembly is this Friday!!
At our assembly this Friday, we will not recognize Students of the Month, so there will be no parent invitations. We will have some fun together as a school and talk about our SUPER theme this year with students. It's going to be a lot of fun and hopefully something that our students are still talking about at the end of the day! Be sure to ask them about the assembly!
**Don't forget to dress in your Dove Spirit Wear every Friday!!
It is VERY important that your student is on time every day, but especially on Assembly Fridays! We don't want them to miss any of the fun at the Assembly!!
Dove Campus Excellence Committee
The Dove Campus Excellence Committee (CEC) is a site based decision committee that meets regularly to discuss campus initiatives, plans for improvement, and progress made towards goals. The committee, which meets after school five times a year, is comprised of teaching staff, non-teaching staff, a district representative, and parent, community, and business members.
We are in need of one business member and one community member to join our committee.
If you know someone that we should contact for the business or community slots, please email Mrs. Landrum at email@example.com

A membership is only $10. Check out all we were able to do last year! And, we have even more planned this year. Your membership allows you a vote, supports the many programs and events we bring to Dove, and does not include an obligation to serve. One membership per family affords you all the benefits for your whole family.
Our goal is to have 1 voice for every Dove student, so please consider getting a membership in honor of each of your Dove students (or sign them up as a student member). Anyone can join! Please share this link with extended family, grandparents, and your neighbors and friends! www.dovepta.org/join
If you can do a little more, consider a Dove Family Sponsorship of $100. This will cover up to 5 memberships. It also includes 5 all-play passes for the Dove Family picnic, and recognition on social media, in the newsletter, and on the Dove PTA website. This sponsorship will be used for student and family programming, teacher appreciation, and supporting our school community. www.dovepta.org/join

Texas House Bill 114
Effective 9/1/2023, Texas House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the DAEP if the student possesses, uses, or is under the influence of, or sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette to another person within 300 feet of school property or at a school-related event. The District encourages all families to talk with their students regarding the dangers associated with vaping or drug usage and to discuss the implications of this new law with your children, emphasizing the importance of adhering to school policies and laws for their own welfare and for the betterment of the school community as a whole.
