Over the past few days some members of our ACURILEAN community experienced a challenging time as a result of the passage of hurricane Irma. Irma’s path impacted on colleagues in República Dominicana, Haiti, Puerto Rico, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, in St. Maarten, the Bahamas, Cuba, other Caribbean islands and Florida.
It is indeed heartening, from information coming to hand, that members and their families are safe. However, there were structural damages to some libraries, in particular, the Philipsburg Public Library in St. Maarten.
There may be infrastructural damage to other libraries of which I am not yet aware of. Notwithstanding this, ACURIL extends its deepest sympathy to all those who were affected by this powerful hurricane.
ACURIL stands united with you to lend support and provide assistance in any way we can during your recovery period.

St. Maarten Library badly damaged, media room looted
The thievery of electronic equipment at the Library and in other areas is incomprehensible considering there is not electricity on St. Maarten, except for generator power at some buildings.
Both the front and back offices of the Library were wrecked by the hurricane. The public area is partially gone. The key box clawed opened by looters and keys used to access still-intact rooms with the purpose to carting away valuables.
No books were checked out by the looters.
The Library had it not been targeted may have been able to give some service to children unable to go to school due to the extensive damage to the country’s infrastructure. This, however, may not be possible.
The building housing the Library is aged. An outcry for a new building was made several years ago.
